Piggybacking on the Greatest Performances thread, what are some fights that really crushed or disappointed or disgusted you?

I find I root for individual boxers much less than I did when I was younger, but when you're a fan of someone it kinda hurts when they lose badly or don't meet your expectations.

For me, off the top of my head:

Lewis vs. Rahman I - I was a big Lewis fan, especially after 2000. So when he obviously didn't take Rahman seriously, then got himself knocked out, I was pretty disgusted. I remember telling myself, "Larry Holmes always got up."

Marvis Frazier vs. Larry Holmes - Marvis came across as a really nice guy to me. While I liked Holmes, and I don't think I thought Marvis would win, I was rooting for him. To see him knocked out so early really bummed me out.

Gerry Cooney vs. George Foreman - I was a big Cooney fan. He was clearly in better shape for Foreman than he was for Spinks (or so I thought at the time). I didn't appreciate Foreman's comeback at that point. I was looking for Cooney to stop Foreman's ridiculous charade of a comeback. Man, was I wrong.

Alexis Arguello vs. Aaron Pryor I - I can't fault Arguello's effort, but I was sure rooting for him to win.

Breazeale vs. Wilder and Stiverne vs. Wilder II - These are recent enough that I don't have any allegiance to any of these guys. But I expect, if you're given a title shot, even at an organizational belt, you'd prepare for it and you'd try to win. And it just didn't feel like either of these guys came to win. That's not only for the glory of the sport or the benefit to your own professional record; a WBC title win over Wilder could've earned either Breazeale or Stiverne millions of dollars in future revenues.

At the time it occurred, Tua's non-performance against Lewis was one of the biggest letdowns in heavyweight history.

It's hard to remember now how much the boxing community was looking forward to Lewis-Tua. It was touted as the best heavyweight matchup in years. Instead, Lewis hit Tua with one right hand and Tua said "The Hell with this!" and decided he was just there for a check.

It's sad that even old, shot Tyson tried harder than Tua did.

Wlad vs Povetkin from both fighters. Wlad could have outboxed Povetkin from the distance if he didn't want to risk, but he decided to make Povetkin tire, so he was holding him countless times and made fight extremely ugly. Yes, he won easily but fight was very ugly. Povetkin, from his side, has shown ZERO competence on how to resist clinches. It's not like Wlad never held his opponents before, so Povetkin should have worked on how to resist opponent's clinching in his training camp. Mercer did it very well against Lewis making it very uncomfortable for Lennox when he tried to hold him. Povetkin didn't know what to do at all.

David Tua vs Lennox Lewis. You just can't came into the biggest fight of your life in disgusting shape - Tua did it....

Samuel Peter and Kirk Johnson vs Vitali Klitschko - the same reason as Tua...

Steverne vs Wilder? No, it wasn't disappointing at all - Stiverne always looked the laziest boxer of all time, so I didn't expect anything else than awful shape from him in the rematch.

Micahel Spinks against Mike Tyson. I really thought Michael had the skill set to beat Tyson at that time. Man was I wrong. He clearly wasn't in the same kind of shape as he was against Holmes with his knees being bad and his heart not being in it anymore. I never expected him to get blown out like that.

Duran - Leonard II (and Duran - Leonard III)

Not sure if much needs to be said. You have the best combined greatest sharing the ring.

The first fight is perhaps the greatest boxing match of all time. Two masters who had no choice but to brawl because they knew all the tricks which made boxing impossible.

The Bad guy actually won...and now is the rematch. Perhaps we would be wrong to expect the same or greater. We got one of the worst things that can happen. A fighter quit.

The 3rd fight might be the worst fight of all time. It is just painful to see Leonard mock Duran incessantly and see Duran unable to do anything about it.

    Close second: Tyson Holyfield I

I wanted Mike to come and take his titles back and clear out the divisions.

Instead he got outboxed and bodied outright by the “impostor” Holyfield. The second Ear Bite fight is just a continuation of the beating he was taking in the first fight.

Holyfield deserves a lot of credit for taking care of Mike by KO.

Besides Ali v Holmes or Tua v Lewis both my personal disappointments
Mayweather v Pac was a bore (happened seven years to late)
Holyfield v Byrd (was embarrassed for Holy not his fault he was older but at the time it was disappointing).

Disappointing performances on what could have been good fights:

    Mayweather vs Pacquiao
    De La Hoya vs Trinidad
    Lewis vs Tua
    Klitschko vs Haye

Curry against Jacquot. I couldn't believe this pedestrian Frenchman could be so easily handling a guy like Curry.

Douglas against Holyfield. I mean, he's a heavyweight first of all, so I should have known, but I also should have been tipped off by his seeming indifference to the sport in general.

One and only for me it is Freitas vs Corrales. End of the fight was very disappointed, but maybe I need to rewatch that fight

I was really upset when Tyson couldn’t beat Lewis in hindsight he didn’t have a chance but I was younger when the fight occurred

Guillermo Rigondeaux also put on one of the most frustrating performance for a fighter of his skills and caliber when he fought against Lomachenko. Yes he was smaller and was the underdog but he could have at least made an effort to grit his teeth and fight. Instead he was a deer in the headlights, was swiftly figured out, and didn't have it in him to even try winning despite his great boxing skills.

Many Hamed fights. Before coming to realise maybe he just wasn't very good.
