Bit of both. He's tricked his way into title shots, no doubt about it. But the skills are there. I think his unwillingness to clear out a division, the drug scandal (just look at his hair when it was going. Very weird, and it's a tell-tale sign of PED abuse), and his stories about mental health will always tar his legacy.
Needs to beat Joshua and build up a more solid record. ATG status rests on beating people, not just everyone agreeing that you would have beaten them. If Lewis never fought Tua, Grant, Golota etc people would say he’d have beaten them, but his legacy is built on cleaning out a division. In that sense Joshua, despite the Ruiz loss, is probably a step ahead of Fury at the moment on the basis of beating Povetkin, Whyte, Parker and Ruiz when Fury instead has Wilder, Chisora, Cunningham and Hammer.
It's a weak era of heavyweight's but if he beats Joshua and becomes undisputed then he wouldn't be far off imo.
OMFG The Matchroom Spin Machine are up and running again with Povetkin, Whyte, Parker and Ruiz being hyped up as decent opponents when the context and truth is simply the following at the time of the Tony Dosh PPV fights: 1. Povetkin - PED user, small and old being 6 years past his sell by date after being easily battered by a declining Clit in Russia. 2. Whyte - the lineal PED pudding who was inexperienced and injured going into the Tony Dosh PPV fight and still had him dancing. Pudding Whyte would take him now as much improved. 3. Parker - Paint Dry Parker the easiest night for any half decent Heavyweight with no ambition outside racking up PPV loot from the mugths. Even made Hughie 'The Skirt' Fury look like Kate Moss on fight night. 4. Ruiz - the Pride of Burger King and simply a little fat mess. The most embarrassing two nights of boxing seen in the division and will be eternally laughed at by all watching every future boxing comedy gold moments. Suggesting Wilder twice, prime Chisora twice and Cunningham are worse opponents than the above is incredible. Unbelievable Jeff.
I think if he beats Joshua once he's pretty much there. Beat Joshua twice, add in Usyk and Whyte or any other top challenger that ermerges and he's cemented. Not sure he will be motivated for anything else after Joshua though.
The funny thing is that people on here were talking about Ruiz Jnr like he was an ATG in the making, granite chinned with fists of stone, the Mexican Terminator, now recognised as The Fighting Pride Of Burger King.
There is no bigger trickster in the boxthing business than Eh Day Hearn. He has sold the PPV mugths many pups yet they come back to buy more. Had people believing that Tony Dosh PPV was the next coming of a prime Mike Tyson when he is simply much more like a well promoted Danny Williams.
I still buzz off Ruiz Jn, admittedly. I really liked him before he fought Joshua. He’s a fatty boom boom but he’s skilful, let his hands go and was willing to take a shot to get his own in. He essentially forced Joshua to completely change his style to beat him. I’d put him in the top 5 heavyweights personally. I rate him higher than Whyte.
Don't know but hes good for the sport. Charismatic and he can be charming. Its just that this heavyweight division is really weak. Certainly moves well for his size but doesn't snap the jab. Wilder was just awful and it showed.
I agree. Whereas Joshua's only advantage over Fury is his power, Usyk has handspeed, footwork and an excellent boxing brain, which makes it a really interesting fight.
