Why don't we re-watch this round and both do our best to explain in our own words why Canelo or GGG deserved to win the round?
Just re-watched Round 5. I can see why you would give that round to GGG. GGG started the round strong, out-jabbing Canelo while fighting off the backfoot. GGG had a good start to the round and appeared to outland Canelo overall with a peppering of jabs throughout the round. However most of GGG's jabs that he landed were light and almost all of GGG's jabs did not land hard. GGG did land one nice jab early on though that did snap Canelo's head back. However Canelo definitely landed the best single shot in the round which was that big right hand. Canelo also was the aggressor throughout the round and was moving forward the entire round. We know that many judges score close rounds to the aggressor and Canelo was the clear consistent aggressor moving forward throughout the entire round. GGG was on his bike the entire round throwing mostly light ineffective jabs. Canelo landed hard jab with 2:20 left, Canelo nice jab to the body with 2:12 left, GGG pushed it down with his gloves but only AFTER it landed to the body. Canelo lands the best punch of the round with 2:05 left, a hard right hand to the head of GGG, followed up by a jab to GGG's chest. A hard jab landed by Canelo with 1:43 left, snapped GGG's head back. 1:35 left, Canelo blocks a GGG jab and throws a counter-jab on GGG with 1:34 left right on the chin. 1:22 left GGG throws a jab (can't tell if it landed) Canelo counters with a left hook that lands around GGG's glove. Canelo using a lot of upper body and head movement in this round. 1:17 left, GGG misses with a wild left hook, Canelo ducks it, re-positions himself and lands a left hook on the top of GGG's head as GGG tries to duck his way out. Good right hand by GGG at 1:12 left, lands clean between Canelo's gloves, but then GGG throws a jab-jab, right hand combo, all missed. (Canelo blocked the two jabs then evaded the follow-up right hand) Good jab landed by Canelo 1:06 left. Dipping uppercut by Canelo 1:01 left, can't see if it was landed or blocked by GGG due to the camera angle showing GGG's back. Good two-punch (right, left) combo by GGG with 0:58 seconds left, first one (the right hand) Canelo blocked the second the jab appeared to get through Canelo's guard. 0:55 left in the round : left hook by GGG blocked by Canelo. 0:53 Hard jab landed by Canelo. 0:52 Another hard jab landed by Canelo. Two great jabs in a row there by Canelo. GGG shakes his head but they both landed clean. (It seems GGG was shaking his head there disappointed in himself for letting those two hard jabs land that clean) 0:45 Light jab by GGG appeared to land through the guard but not as clean or as hard as most of Canelo's jabs. Followed by another landed jab by GGG, but again these are very light ineffective jabs by GGG compared to the hard head-snapping jabs that Canelo landed. 0:41 another hard clean jab landed by Canelo. 0:34 GGG throws 3 straight jabs, each mostly slipped by Canelo, then Canelo responds with a jab of his own landed on GGG's collarbone. They each jab each other at the same time 0:31 seconds left in the round. Canelo slips a shot then Canelo counters with two body shots in a row 0:28 seconds left. GGG felt those takes a deep breath and moves away continuing to retreat. 0:25 GGG jab, half-landed, half-blocked by Canelo. 0:23 GGG throws 2 jabs both do not land 0:21 Canelo jab lands hard on GGG's head once again, GGG continues to retreat 0:18 Another hard jab landed by Canelo, you can hear the thud of that punch landed on GGG's head 0:17 GGG tries to counter with a right hand, Canelo appears to evade it, may have landed slightly but nothing on it, Canelo counters with a right hook as GGG tries to duck it, he couldn't avoid it. Then Canelo misses wildly with a left hook as GGG moves away. 0:13 GGG jab landed but nothing on it, Canelo tried to evade it but was a tad late. 0:12 GGG left hook hard to tell if it landed due to the angle, might have been blocked. 0:08 Good body shot right hand by GGG as both men were throwing punching. One of GGG's best body shots. 0:06 GGG jab blocked by Canelo, GGG though follows it up with a good right hook that lands. Canelo responds with a good right hand on GGG. GGG throws 2 more jabs both blocked by Canelo. GGG has another jab blocked by Canelo to end the round. Competitive round I agree but Canelo definitely landed the better harder single shots in this round. And while GGG definitely threw and landed more jabs this round overall, Canelo landed way more harder and more impactful head-snapping jabs.
So I've stated my case as to why Canelo deserved to win the 5th round in the rematch. I went through the round punch for punch giving time stamps, so if you disagree with anything I said there and want to argue that I was misleading in anyway in describing what happend you are free to do that. I have given the reasons why Canelo won the round. He was the constant aggressor throughout the entire round, which was a big argument that GGG fans gave in the first match for why GGG won many of the close rounds in the first match, he was the aggressor remember and Canelo was in retreat. Besides Canelo being the aggressor throughout the entire round, Canelo landed the hardest most impactful single shots of the rounds, more body shots, more hard jabs. GGG only landed a couple of clean hard shots, whilst Canelo landed many clean hard shots. It's really as simple as that, and all 3 judges agreed. The question is will scandcb make his case as to why he believes GGG won the 5th round as he claims happened? Or will it just be another case of a GGG fan living in imaginary land and refusing to support their scorecards or explaining how GGG won rounds that they claim he did.
I'm not going to waste an hour of my life going through anything with you since I've seen how you score Canelo's fights. Canelo jab bounces off Golovkin's gloves? Shadow " ... Canelo's blistering, head-snapping, spit-spraying power punch wobbles GGG ..." When it comes to Canelo you're the equivalent of those guys that insisted Fury failed to beat the Wilder 1 count when he literally rose at 9.
I'm not asking you to spend an hour of your life. I'm just asking you a simple question. How did you score the round?
I thought GGG landed cleaner and with more volume. Particularly with the jab. That in a nutshell is why I scored that round in his favour.
@scandcb When you say GGG landed "with more volume" that sounds to me like you are referring to the fact that he threw more punches than Canelo. And he may have even connected more times, though many of them were blocked partly or fully by Canelo. And most of the jabs that GGG did land clean didn't have much power on them. Ask yourself who's landed punches in this round were more impactful and who's landed punches were more powerful. Also ask yourself who in your estimation inflicted more damage on the opponent through punching in this round. Also who was the aggressor. And who landed the absolute best punch of the round. The answer to all these questions is demonstratably Canelo which is why he won the round. I think it's important that claims like this can be demonstrated when watching the footage. Somebody can claim something happened but until they can demonstrate it and go into specifics showing it actually happening, it remains an unsupported claim.
I gave it to Golovkin, narrowly, mostly based on activity. Canelo landed the best punch of the round, though. Golovkin was more consistent with the jab and his 1-2s that racked up activity while Canelo was doing nothing. They both had some decent moments, and Canelo's jab was also useful. A thing that might sway a scorer one way or another is how effective you think Canelo's bodywork was. It seems to me that some of the stuff that looks like it is landing at first glance is in fact landing on the arm Golovkin keeps across his body. I didn't add any extra credit to GGG for making Canelo miss wildly as people gave to Canelo in their first encounter. If I were inclined to give brownie points for making the other guy miss, then Golovkin took the round clearly.
