I scored it 7-5 Lewis a few months back. Holyfield was past his prime and had far more wear and tear on him, so he could only fight in spurts. A younger more active Holyfield beats him IMO
Lewis was peak, Holyfield was years past his prime yet pushed Lewis all the way. I had Lewis winning this by a round or two, but prime Holyfield would’ve been far too busy and mobile for Lewis.
I just rewatched it, I don't think it was remotely close, Holyfield didn't do anything until round 6. Here are my scoring and notes: 1 - 10-9 Lewis - not much action, but Lewis is landing his jab and counters Holyfield as he comes into range. 2 - 10-9 Lewis - a bit more action but not much more. Lewis is landing his jab and a few counters as Holyfield comes in. The Americans fans get excited towards the end of the round as Holyfield throws some big punches but replays show him missing those punches. Still Holyfield's best round yet 4 10-9 Lewis - an inactive round from both but Lewis is constantly jabbing and hooking off the jab. Holyfield looks bemused. The action picks up in the last 30 seconds where Holyfield tries to come forward. As per strategy Lewis is countering with uppercuts and right hands as Holyfield comes into range. The jab lands but isn't clear if the right is landing. Then for the last minute Lennox jabs Holyfield from range as Bruno can be heard from ringside telling Lennox not to fight Holyfield's fight, ie stay at range. Did Lennox hear this and heed the advice? 6. 10-9 Holyfield. Lewis is visibably breathing harder at the start of this round. Holyfield jabs more than Lewis for the first minute, mainly jabbing to the body. Lewis lands a good right mid way through the round but it looks like he's taking the round off for the first half of the round. Holyfield lands a few left hooks and is getting some bodyshots off 7 10-9 Holyfield - Lewis starts positive with a jab and 2 rights hands the look to land on the button. Inside Lennox is landing his big uppercut although you can't quite see if it's landing to the body or head. Lennox is finally putting his full arsenal together and unloading combination of a jab, right, left hook and uppercut. Nearly everything seems to be landing in the first minute. Then Holyfield comes forward and manages to get his left hook off. Lennox is looking tired and Holyfield comes forward winning the next 30 seconds but Lennox fires back his uppercut to halt Holyfield's advance. But Holyfield has the better engine and is managing to land both his left hook and overhand right. Lennox has dispensed with the jab and is firing back uppercuts. Close round, first half was Lewis but Holyfield landed more power shots 8. 10-9 Lewis - Lewis back to jabbing. He's employing a jab and grab strategy. Holyfield either taking a rest or isn't able to get past the jab. He clearly wins this round by getting his power shots off. The fight ends, Lennox Lewis raises his hands, Holyfield looks dejected. Lewis: 117-111 - I could see 116-112 if I give Holyfield the 9th, which was the closest round The judges scorecards: Chuck Giampa 116-112 | Bill Graham 117-111 | Jerry Roth 115-113
This fight showed Lewis's chin to be quite solid. He took some left hooks mid/late that he absorbed without too much trouble.
It was clearly Lewis. There are some Holyfield fans who claim he won it, based on work in the middle rounds, but Lewis started quicker, and closed the final three rounds stronger. 116-112, or 117-111 is a good card. The judges did their job well this night. The best Holyfield could argue for is 113-115 defeat. How some Holyfield fans think he won this won is beyond me.
Lewis won it. I've watched it again quite recently and Evander put a better showing in than first time, but Lennox had the better of it. The 116-112 card is about right imo.
116-112 Lewis was how I scored it. Even if you give Holyfield the ninth it would have still been 115-113.
No, actually a lot of the press media thought Holyfield won.The judges did a horrible job that night because of what happened the first time. But look, I am totally fine with the official results, one draw and one win for Lennox.
