I think he's one of the most underrated Brit fighters of recent times. Won British, commonwealth, European, and IBF and WBA world titles. Very solid, good technical fighter. Beat Julio Ceja, Tomoki Kameda x 2, Stuart Hall, Liborio Solis etc. Had a strangely very low profile when he was World champion, probably cause he was in the lower weights.
You are correct mate - simply seen as another non elite British Boxer who became World Champion along with the likes of Tony Dosh PPV, Kell Brook, Ricky Burns, Tony Bellew and Charlie Edwards. Never found him the most exciting myself and Inoue certainly wasted no time ironing him out. Good career and probably did not earn what he deserved due to the lower weight class.
Once again, think it was down to style, no doubt he was a very good fighter, but that slightly hunched back of his, didn't do him any favors I am afraid , he wasn't what you might call Napoles like ! but yea respect to him, and his achievements.
I'd say he was more unheralded rather than underrated. He got a gift decision against Solis in their first fight and got destroyed very quickly by Inoue (no shame in that) and I think he reached as high as he ever could've. Very good boxer with some good wins, particularly the wins against Kameda. A career to be proud of, no more, no less.
A very decent fighter, though perhaps fortunate with one of the Kameda decisions and his win against Solis was a total robbery. Feared for him in the Inoue fight after seeing him on the scales
He absolutely murdered himself to make weight for the Inoue fight he was an complete ghost in the ring that night. Remember hearing Dave Coldwell discuss it during a podcast and it made for an interesting listen.
He was about a 2/1 underdog in the first Kameda fight, can't remember his price for the Ceja fight but I remember watching it live. Certainly lost vs Solis, the Inoue fight was literally just a cash grab. Preparation in Japan was terrible, I think he was only out there for something like 5 days. As others said, looked a ghost on the scales and rumours before the fight were the camp was struggling to find sufficient food. Basically fought Inoue for a pay check. Overall he had a very good career, he reminds me of Ricky Burns in some respects. I don't think most people expected him to go much beyond domestic level. He beat a legit decent fighter to win the world title. He beat Kameda twice (gave him the first fight by a point), showed it was no fluke by winning the rematch. Kameda at the time was a legit world champion. It's also well known that he doesn't really like boxing that much, he did it because he realised he was pretty good at it and it paid him well enough!
He was painfully thin when making weight, it never looked right and towards the end I have to say I found it a little disturbing.
Is he not in a bad way with alcohol, few months back his ex was posting loads of videos and crap on twitter
5”9 bloke fighting at under 9 stone for 13 years is absolutely silly. The strain he must have put on his body starving himself like that for so long must be unreal. Lee Selby did a similar thing. I’m not sure if it’s just British fighters that do this but I don’t get why our lads insist on not moving up through the weights as their bodies naturally fill out. Pacman, Mikey Garcia, Linares, Roman González, Donaire, are just some active examples of fighters moving through the weights instead of trying to weight bully opponents by hydrating overnight. Anyway, he’s a decent fighter, tons of heart and to win a world title is a superb achievement.
Jamie was a little unlucky to have fought in the era of Froch, Joshua, Khan, Groves, Degale etc... A very brave guy who got the very best out of what he had.
I always had a softspot for Jamie mcdonnell the gormless looking goblin haha.... Real hard working pro... I could be mistaken but think first time I saw him was on Friday night fights vs Ian napa.... I don't think I thought he won it but he gave a good account of himself. Not alot of power, solid chin and work rate, could tell he was more of a hard worker than naturally gifted... Remember his fight with stephane jamoye being a mini cracker. Felt bad when inoue ironed him out cos it wasn't really a fair reflection of him as a fighter....juat think he was dead at the weight He was a funny fighter... I can see why he didn't want to move up sooner as most of his advantages would be negated at a higher weight. Enjoyed his career and he did beat some great little fighters
