I don’t see why not. Joe Louis was a much better fighter than Sonny Liston. What did Sonny do better than Joe Louis?

Liston beats Marciano unmercifully plain an simple. Cant believe it's taken this long to figure out. Marciano fans live on fantasy island when defending him in some of these mythical fights

 

Oh lets mark him down because, unlike Marciano he wasnt involved in life and death struggles with old guys.

 

But he actually landed on Liston!

I'd like to see the first Lowry fight in which Marciano is described as being on the verge of being stopped by his 178 lbs journeyman opponent.

 

And the fight with Keene Simmons, who reportedly had Marciano on the brink of a knockout.

It was no pink tea affair. For the favored Marciano rallied after being on the brink of a second round knock-out in a bloody, lusty sockeroo.

Simmons was still on his feet when Referee Sharkey Buonnano stopped the scrap with eight seconds remaining in the eighth round. The battered and beaten Simmons could have gone the 10-round distance in the opinion of some of the 5137 paying fans.

Simmons caught Marciano flush on the cheekbone with a powerful right cross in the second round. It was a counter-punch after Simmons had absorbed a left hook. His jaw swollen after the fight, Rocky admitted that the blow carried plenty of authority.

Marciano had to call on all his court wiles to avoid Simmons the rest of the frame. Simmons, sensing victory, was the aggressor in the third round when he opened a cut over Rocky's left eye. Partially blinded by the flow of blood, Rocky saved the situation by a desperate counter attack.

Marciano never fought someone close to Sonny Liston. If he did, he'd be 49-1.
