I rate Beterbiev as the #1 or #2 p4p fighter in the world. It's between he and Usyk for me. That said, he was never hyped. Always looked as an overachiever. A guy who was crushing cans and would be made to look foolish against high level opposition. So why has he CRUSHED everybody? He's 35. It's not like he's made some drastic and rapid improvements recently. No, he's been a killer and he's been the best fighter in the world for 5 years now. My guess is we are obsessed with fast twtichy fighters and Beterbiev is a clubbing, brute power fighter instead of an explosive athlete. And we are also obsessed with classical, pure technicians ala Juan Manuel Marquez. And Beterbiev certaintly isn't a classical technician even though he is superbly technically proficient. People are stylistically biased.
For someone to get credit, they have to be in big fights. Gvozdyk was basically his first elite level fight
He was also a decorated amateur. Even a lot of the hardcore fans didn't think he was a p4p talent. But I get you're point about not a lot of exposure to the mainstream.
Also he beat Kovalev, Usyk and Gvozdyk in the amateurs. 3 extremely high level fighters. And it's made more impressive that Beterbievs style isn't suited for the amatuer game. He has a style that is optimal for pro boxing. One that is predicated on pain and destruction instead of point scoring or love tapping like they do in amateurs. 295-5 record.
Ya, he's the rare both types of power. When he pops the clutch and guns it......... Nothing else like it on boxing right now.
I've been hyping him for over a decade and telling people he was an absolute wrecking machine whose style couldn't be anymore tailor-made for the pros since he was down at LHW in the ams. He should've turned over in 2008-2009 and had he done so he would've achieved so much more than he has. The only LHW who could've stood in his way preventing him from ruling the division with an iron fist is a prime Kovalev.
If Top Rank fast track him now we can get to see some few years out of him yet. He wont suddenly get old like people think. His body wont fade and he is not a reflex type of fighter either.
He turned over too late for me and hasnt fought enough since he has been a professional as Kirk points out. Having said all that the boxing fans, especially the casuals. Love a fighter with brutal knockout power. Beterbiev hits like a truck and has the skills to land on elite level fighters. That is a rare combination. I would love Beterbiev to fight more frequently from now on and be in the big fights.
Beterbiev is now a well known and proven commodity. All the big promotors are aware of him and his KO power is what will tune casuals in and make tnem pay for PPVs and subscriptions. Promotors should be making offers - especially DAZN - to have Beterbiev fight one of their marquee stars; Canelo, Bivol or even at cruiserweight. In my opinion, there wont be any live gates or audience filled arenas and venues for the next year or so, so this is the perfect time for boxing promotors to capitalise on a growing demand/willingness to pay from the public who WANT to see the big fights and are happy to pay for them. UFC have shown the blueprint; keep up the promotion and people are ready to pay. You just have to be ready to take their money.
