Baker didn't have the power to be in there with Rocky.

Marciano didn't face that many real bangers.

An interesting side-note to Baker's power was that very early in his career his power was likened to that of a young Joe Louis. That is, until his hands started giving him problems. After that he had to curtail any natural snap he had and conservatively box rather than slug. I don't know if they were brittle or if it was simply the uncanny swelling we've heard tale of. Regardless, once the issue arose it seems like knockouts from there on only appeared to be from his natural heft from such a big dude (by 50's standards) rather than any snap. I think the only time I've read about him landing a big shot again was the Roy Harris fight. By all accounts it was a helluva shot he landed on Roy that dropped him.

Looks like a February 1956 bout was sort of proposed by Jim Norris in November 1955, in the context of "Maybe we'll fight the winner of the December 7 Valdes - Baker bout in February. I'd rather see Marciano fight in February than wait until June." Turns out Baker, even in beating Valdes, was so boring that even he acknowledged he'd have to go through #1 contender Archie Moore to get a shot at the title. After that it appears talk turned to a Marciano-Moore rematch. Baker, instead, lost to Hurricane Jackson in February and would go 1-2 for the year.

I think Marciano would stop Baker in the middle rounds, unless he (Marciano) had slipped more than we realize after the Moore bout.

Uh, yeah, and he was undefeated.

    Thanks for making my point.

This is part of the reason that Marciano retired when he did.

There was not another big money opponent out there.

I think everybody knows Marciano was undefeated ,so why did you mention it? I said Marciano didn't face many real bangers and he didn't.Why that should have rattled your cage I have no idea?

I proves my point. If you didn't have some power, you had no chance against him.

But Baker had top notch boxing skills and his hands despite being somewhat crippled were very fast!!!
