1940 Joe Louis vs James Toney at HW

Louis has always maintained he felt he won the fight.

Thankfully they had a rematch and Louis underlined his superiority.

 

Toney has zero chance against Joe Louis,, only question is when does he get knocked out.

 

Toney can't get knocked out.

Actually a pretty good matchup. Toney was such a good counter puncher he would Time Louis and fire right in between Louis own shots, with his rolling counter right. I mean he made Holyfield look awful and Joe was susceptible to the right. Having said that, prime Louis has much better stamina than the hot and cold muscles Holyfield, better output and better accuracy. Joe pounds out a painful for Toney UD after a competitive first 4 rounds

 

I disagree on the exceptional rating at heavyweight.

 

Louis has too many advantages. Height, reach, speed, timing, greatness.

I don’t see how Toney can hope to get much offensive done. Can he really risk trying to counter Louis? He cannot take Louis inside or outbox him from the outside.

After a few feeling out rounds Louis realizes he has small but crafty fighter with attitude but no real ability to hurt him or sustain an offense.

Louis is not to settle down for a 15 round cruise. He is going to come after Toney and start countering him with speed and combinations that Toney cannot prepare for.

 

We're talking about Joe Louis....

Toney would have some moments while it lasts, but he can't compare to Louis in power.

However, he could trouble Louis as Joe had issues with the best mover / boxer types he fought. Either Louis via mid to late-round TKO, or via UD if Toney runs is the most likely outcome. Toney had a solid chin at heavyweight. Better than Conn or Walcott whom Louis had to come from behind to KO.

I would not rule out a SD or even UD for Toney as Louis was often bewildered by the top boxers he fought and took a re-match to adjust. The shorter the number of rounds for Toney the better.

How can anyone confidently state A beat B, when all they have seen is highlights?

 

Yeah, people act like Walcott dominated Louis in what we have available. In reality, Louis boxed very well for the rest of the fight and he won rounds.

 

Because the highlights are emphatic and because Walcott claimed Louis admitted he lost straight after the fight. I don't think Walcott lied about that.
