If Loughran is ... ... to you, then why do you even post on classic forum? You really don't know who Tommy Loughran was?
This thread is that bad, it's good. I literally can't stop reading through it. I usually mock those who think any pro from today beats any pro from yesteryear based on just being modern. But a guy who stopped his amateur career as a 16 year old, thinking he'd knockout a former heavyweight world champion is actually laughable. To then see this same man thinks he would beat any world champion of a smaller weight class than him is even more so. I knew this poster would be good for a laugh when he started throwing out the nonsense that Old Foreman was better than Prime Foreman, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine he would be this much value.
Sharkey certainly wasn't a powerful puncher, but tell me that he was featherfirst: This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
You´re a rational guy into physics? You know as much as I do that you inductively chose one of the absolute minor wins where Sharkey stopped someone of note. He did not stop ancient Wills. He did not stop young Risko or more matured Risko. It was until the 4th Maloney fight and dozens of meetings that he finally stopped anyone with a pulse. After that, no Stribling. No Schmeling. No MW Walker. No shakey chin Carnera on two occasions. He got Loughran once in two fights, Phil Scott and 178lb Jack Delany. Its what his 13 KOs in 37 wins reflect, he didn´t pack a punch. You can barely find a name he stopped inside the distance. And I´d rather choose him, a featherfist boxer to fight 220lb Johnny after a training camp than I would choose Galento, the Baers or Max Schmeling, who finished his career with a 69% KO-ratio. Simply because I think an amateur with too much mild sparring is of course less used to getting hit, than he is getting boxed. Whatever you want to see in Sharkey, its not his power in that instance. For other stuff, put him against Qawi or De Leon, because against modern HWs he wouldn´t get much respect, other that trying to duck getting pummeled.
I see myself as pretty close to that level. I agree with you that head gear makes a difference, but I have the experience and reflexes/muscle memory/timing/etc In your analogy, you said that he was skilled, not just taller.
I train in BJJ these days. No doubts I'd make Royce Gracie tap out due to how much the sport has moved on lmao.
Headgear makes it "different", making it more difficult to see punches and making you move your head more to slip punches. The real advantage of headgear is that it makes a cut less likely, especially from a head butt. A lot of fighters don't like wearing headgear, but we make at least one wear a headgear in sparring in the event of a clash of heads. Our boxers consider not wearing a headgear an unfair advantage so sometimes one will wear a headgear for a few rounds then switch, giving both of them a few rounds without the headgear. I agree with you, a 7' skilled high school basketball player today would dominate at any level of basketball 100 years ago. Good 7' high schoolers are ready for today's pro game, they are just restricted by the rule making them go to college for one year before going to the NBA.
I picked someone far better than Johnny_B. It's that simple, I never implied that Sharkey was strong hitter. Being not a puncher in pro HW division is different thing than having no power against complete amateur without any experience in real boxing.
Boxing was far more spread out and popular sport 100 years ago than basketball, so it's not comparable situation. Pick any pro basketball player from 1950s and he'd destroy any forum troll. Same applies to boxing in 1930s, you have no idea what you are talking about if you really believe that guys without any experience in real boxing would beat someone as experienced as Sharkey. You're supposed to be a coach, you should know more about the sport you're teaching young guys.
Although I reckon I have a good chance, I have no problem if you guys think otherwise. But when it comes to punching power, I'm willing to bet my life I hit harder than Sharkey. Far harder. And I've been boxing for over 20 years, the fact that I choose to wear headgear most of the time does not mean I don't have experience.
In my limited boxing experience Good coaches are tough to find...they are out there though...lot of guys out there who think they can coach
