I see myself as a pretty strong guy. Ive beaten many guy's in arm wrestling. But you'll never see me posting about how id beat professional arm wrestlers. Not because I lack confidence but because I lack the credentials. I don't know if im on that level simply because I've never competed on that level. Again you are basing this on a handful of sparring matches and a very short amateur career. So no you don't have the experience and timing of even a career journeyman. You simply don't. Name one skilled high school player that you think could hang with even a mediocre playoff team. The difference in levels are HUGE.
I thought I was strong until I actually got into lifting. I would regularly Bench more than my mates and we all played sports so I figured I must be alright. But once I actually begun talking to dedicated lifters I realised how low. My strength levels actually were. I'd be showing off I could do 12 reps at 60kg and there's people benching way over 100kg. Even now, I can Bench 115kg 1rm but I know in comparison there's so many who are so much stronger.
I can take it a step further with my own martial arts experience. I'm 6'1 with long arms and legs and when I competed in jiu jutsu weighed between 195-205. I'm as strong as an ox (functional strength and brute strength) and had been training for 2 years with a black belt Gracie trained instructor who was once ranked 2nd in the world for his division. He promoted me to blue belt and always gave me compliments. Eventually he had to cut ties with the head instructor--who replaced him with a guy named Bryan. Now Bryan is the complete opposite of me physically. Short with short stubby arms, short neck, lean, etc. Weighed about 135ish. But he had been training in jiu jutsu for more than 10 years and trained guys in Vegas gyms. So me thinking I'm hot sh*t being a 19-20 year old with a huge size and strength advantage tried to to spar with him a few times. He completely dominated and made it look easy without breaking a sweat. It was like an older brother rough housing with his toddler brother in terms of skill. I actually did much better against his assistant instructor who was a big stocky 6'3 guy and I actually beat him a few times. But Bryan? After a year the results did not change at all despite getting stronger and improving my technique and stamina. And even now several years later and after studying judo I'm about 98% certain he'd still beat me 9/10. If I had the same amount of experience as Bryan sure, he'd obviously have a harder time due to the size difference, but when the difference in skill is that wide the only chance a bigger guy has in a fight is either "punchers chance" or "mauler's chance" (overwhelming with brute force). As someone who has competed in more than half a dozen sports, I can give more than a dozen similar anecdotes either of me getting humiliated by a smaller guy with way more experience, a gym buddy of mine, or fights I've seen. So I can't help but laugh at this thread.
Anyone’s who actually trained in a gym probably has similar experiences. We had a girl who trained in our gym (won the golden gloves that year we trained w her!). Every time a hot **** new guy would come in and want to spar (everyone wants to spar) they would make new guy spar w her (about 5”3 150 if I remember right). They would never take it seriously till she popped them in the mouth. Watched her knock down more then enough 6”2 guys who thought they were hot ****. That’s why I kind of doubt johnnys story a bit. If he seriously trained he should know size ain’t everything. These people are professionals and aren’t boxing for fun once a month. They’re in the gym hours everyday working on their craft. As was Sharkey.
A handful ?!? I've been sparring for over 20 years, I've had countless sparring sessions, not just a few. Yes, the difference might be big, but only between a modern high school players and a modern player in a mediocre playoff team, not one that competed 100 years ago.
@Johnny_B, why don't yoi show us samples of your amazing technique and power? Why don't you analyze and tell me what Sharkey did wrong and how you'd take advantage of it?
You mean training, you've been intermittently training as a hobby. When was your last fight? What is your biggest boxing achievement? Who's the best boxer you've faced in an actual fight? How many styles have you had to prove yourself against? Everyone knows sparring and boxing are too completely different things.
Boxing skill in general peaked in the late 30s and 40s up to the television era. The fighters from that time could do everything.
No they couldn't, at least not in the HW division. The 30's and 40's top HWs would get beat by the top HW's from the 60s up to the 00s
Lol u had guys like Archie Moore who was fighting deep into the 60s as a ranked man beating ranked HWs...and he was like 45-50 lol. Are you really implying men like Charles, Walcott , Joe freaking Louis, Archie Moore Marciano couldn’t compete on the 60s up? Think you need to do more boxing homework. At least please explain yourself on how what form wise would be an advantage today for them?
The 90s is when a relic of a dinosaur came back and knocked out the HW champ 20 years after losing his crown.
