Trinidad-Wright is a good example of RJJ, in Round 2, telling us exactly what’s going to go down the rest of the fight. I gotta speculate that most who don’t like Roy as a commentator are a little biased against him as a fighter and that carries over to his mic game. Roy has a bit of a bias towards boxers he perceives to be “great.” He was very complimentary of Loma during Loma-Walters. He’s been to the top of the boxing mountain, so to speak, and he recognizes game. He knows a generational talent like a Mayweather or a Loma when he sees one. But I understand that one of the criticisms of Roy on the mic is that he start to sound like a fan. Andre Ward is also great on the mic.
Nah, he is good, but no where near the GOAT Manny Steward. Manny had the perfect combination of insight, knowledge and passion. He could break something down and foresee where things were going, but would let his emotions take over when something special was happening. I really enjoyed that, you could clearly tell his love for the sweet science - Like Gatti-Ward round 9.
I don’t if a lot of folks agree with this, but Merchant is one of the worst to me. He just constantly sniped at guys like B-Hop for not fighting in his preferred style. Boring is a subjective term and Merchant applied it like he was the ultimate arbiter of what’s exciting or not exciting. The closing seconds of PAC-Marquez IV is a great microcosm of the dynamic at HBO Boxing. Roy with the iconic call, Lampley coming in with some good detail about this being the keystone moment of Marquez’s career, and then Merchant babbling something about a fifth fight. Read the room Larry. Excuse me for going long form on all these posts, but I ain’t posted in 5 years! I got some thoughts!
Macklin for me mate makes a good commentator, his honesty anyway, he takes a back seat while everyone is blowing smoke up the A sides arse, then he'll add the balance
