I don't know about others, but for me personally I always put it in context of the older fighter.

So for example Jones would have to be weighing 160 fight night to compete for the title, imo.

I'd say that we are In better contact with reality than ever before! LaMotta did drop and beat a prime Ray Robinson.

It's one of the great wins particularly given the ease with which it was achieved. It was dominant.

My own view is that James Toney was intimidated by Roy Jones going into that fight. He probably had crutch excuse with making the. weight. He had just moved up to '68 the year before. The weight had nothing to do with that result. Toney was never gonna catch up with Roy Jones. James a counter puncher and liked to box use his defense. Not the best to fight the quickest 168lbs Willie Pep.
It was Jones power that really fuked with Toney's head. He couldnt afford to be careless himself..

The problem with discrediting Jones for the Toney fight is that we need info about Toney’s condition heading into his other fights in and around 168.

I’m suspicious that he cut a ton of weight for a lot of his best performances, especially at 160.

After reviewing the fight, I think Toney was robbed.

I know it was Super Middle, the OP asked why it’s not rated as highly nowadays and his run at light heavy was not great even if dubious decisions against Griffin. Prince Charles was a drained light heavy.

Toney did well at Middle but is reign was not with controversy, ask Dave Tibieri. The guy never fought again walking away from boxing. Reggie Johnson also had a claim to beating Toney and McCallum fights were close but Mike was on the slide. I was a fan but in hindsight Toney was overhyped imo

Who weighed 30 lbs less than RJJ would in the ring. MW Jones would be a LHW in the 1940's.

Who other MW than LaMotta gets so much mileage out of beating (but mostly losing to) a WW?

Even old day fighters with same day weigh ins would gain weight after the weigh in. Using modern methods you could still gain the water weight back on same day weigh ins

Fair enough. It’s just that you said he was better at CW and above. I think he was better at SMW and MW. Sure, he had the odd moment with Tiberi etc, but he’d already fought 46 fights by the time he fought Roy. Overall, the best versions we saw of him were at MW.
