He never struck me as a really massive guy. Real height was probably 5ft7 and even though he was chisseled he had low body fat. I would say 165-170 max on the night.
He weighed in well below the limit many times. He was never, ever out of shape. I doubt he regained too much. I’d be surprised if he ever weighed even 170 by fight time. Probably 165 or so.
Yeah, 163-165 probably seems about right. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a welterweight today, maybe even an early appearance at 140.
Hagler said in the magazines way back when that he never let his weight get above 165 between fights. He also fought with same day weigh ins so, if he weighed 158 in the afternoon there is no way in the world that he would be at 165 getting into the ring. Think about it. You weigh in at noon and fight at 8. You go and eat but not excessively because you want it to move through your system before you get in the ring. You drink but not a gallon of Gatorade for the same reason. After you eat and move your bowels you might pick up a pound . A guy as diligent as Hagler was about his weight- all the time, not just "in camp"- probably got into the ring just about the same as when he got on the scale.
As mentioned, Hagler was in the 5'7"-5'8" range despite his bogus listing (hardly uncommon in boxing) and gained little or no weight, so probably low 160s. For comparison, this makes him basically the exact same size as Marcos Maidana and Victor Ortiz when they fought Mayweather. I am not wading into the Hagler vs GGG or whoever else debate, but it absolutely gets overlooked that Hagler was the same size as a good-sized current day welterweight. Also he is a good 10lbs smaller than a lot of the top 154 guys today.
5'7 is pretty short, didn't look that short to me.... Hatton was listed as 5'7 no way they were same height
I wasn't so sure myself, I just looked at the Height difference between Hagler and Hearns in photos though and does seem that Hagler looked smaller than Hearns by a fair bit, so may be some truth to it.
https://www.celebheights.com/s/Sugar-Ray-Leonard-47275.html Leonard 5'9" at peak....looks between 5'8" - 5'9" today probably with a tiny bit of age-related shrinking. Hagler was definitely noticeably shorter right? Although maybe it was only really an inch and he was a good 5'8"
I'm not really sold on the idea that a fighter of the same day weigh in era automatically would drop down several divisions in today's era. Or would rehydrate to McClellan like fight night weights. Hagler was just a guy who was always in shape and on weight. From a time where you couldn't afford to blow out between fights Ricky Hatton style because you were fighting more often. I'd like to know where they would take the weight from. He was shredded and well defined as it was. He was also a middleweight as a teenage amateur and maintained that throughout his career.
This has nothing to do with whether or not someone is in shape. In fact from the science I’ve read on it, people who are more in shape actually have more capacity to dehydrate. Either way, it’s common knowledge that there is a 10-20lb difference between a person’s hydrated and dehydrated weight. So for example, if Hagler weighed 160 when properly hydrated, he could get to 147 for the purpose of a weigh in and then back to 160 the next day for a fight, simply if he chose to do so.
Marvin took a 90 minute stroll in the afternoon of his fight with Ray Leonard. Cars were honking as they drove by Pat, Goody and Marvin. I believe both Ray and Marvin were 163 going into the ring. Ray weighed 150lbs after the fight after losing 13 lbs...As for Hagler’s height...He was 5FT 8....The listed height was as ridiculous as his ‘official’ age changing by 2 years in 1982.
