Is this a satirical post to point out the drop off in toughness, talent and resume between the '70s and today at 160? Please say it is.
Briscoe fought at middleweight, weighed in at 159 and entered the ring at 159, 160. Jacobs fought at middleweight and enters the ring at 185. When he fought Canelo there was a clause in the contract that stipulated that Jacob's weigh no more than 175. Many claimed it was unfair to force a guy fighting for the middleweight title to be no larger than a lightheavy. With no such unfairness in the contract Jacobs would weigh 185 to fight Briscoe, which was a heavyweight in Brisoe's era. Briscoe did not believe that he could beat heavyweights so he fought as a middleweight. How would Jacobs do against Jimmy Ellis or Doug Jones? If Jacobs fought with a same day weigh in at 160, Jacobs would die by the 4th round.
Kelly Pavlik came in over 175 on fight night. . Jacobs weight isn't out of the ordinary. Lots of guys put on 10-15lbs overnight
But in the context of the question asked, Bennie Briscoe would be fighting at least a lightheavy, if not a cruiserweight. And just because everybody does it does not mean that lightheavies claiming to be middleweights is any less ridiculous. I think they do it to claim an unfair advantage in hypothetical fights with guys from other eras.
Bad Bennie Briscoe takes this won by a narrow decision, no knockdowns here, but Bennie has taken the best by Hagler, Monzon, and Rodrigo Valdes. Danny Jacobs proves to be a very formidable opponent, he is tough, and has faced death before, but the experience of Briscoe would prove too much to overcome.
