Mirko has it right. Kovalev has that typical EE style where they work from behind a jab to set up their offense and use their feet to create distance to dictate the range of a fight. He will either try create an opening with his jab or try catch a guy coming in and counter him. Kovalev had a great, great jab. His main failing is improper conditioning.

And even that is only as of late. Before Ward he could go 12 without too much trouble. I think his weakness is that he doesn't have a real good gut for taking punches. He's very soft to the body, and that should be the game-plan of most of they fight him.

You`re right about everything other than countering, Kovalev never counters, when you attack him he defends without countering.

Sillakh steps in with a left, Kovalev steps inside his hook and crunches him with a right and drops him. 5:30 there's an analysis of the KO

Who would win between a yellow jacketed wasp and a praying mantis, though?

    boxer-puncher

I remember when he was called "nothing but a puncher with limited skills" by a lot of fans. Then he crushed Cleverly, went on a rampage and schooled B-Hop a year later.

    Yup.
Ward slowed him down with body work in the first fight. In the second fight, Kovalev came in guns blazing and got tired.
Same gameplan against Alvarez as the Ward rematch. But it looked like Kovalev´s age did catch up with him. At least in the rematch.
They changed his style a bit for the rematch; to throw a lot less power punches and just work the jab, but it was clear that Kovalev no longer had the stamina to go hard 12 rounds.
Yarde just clipped Kovalev but he himself gassed . This is why you need to fight proper challenges before someone like Kovalev. Experience cost Yarde big time that night.
And then Canelo pressured Kova and landed a lot of clean body shots from the opening bell.

I really miss the old Kov. Great timing, working behind a sledge hammer jab always trying to set up that killer right.
