And then you have Tim Bradley here:

Excellent boxer, **** technique. Nothing but arm punches.

And he fights exactly like he practices on the bag. Dude had an insane work ethic and likely a very strong lower body, didn't use it at all.

I think you might be thinking about an uppercut to the body. You still have to shift your weight to get proper power on a hook.

Bradley punches a bit like Chisora used to, lots of upper body slapping type shots. He gets a bit of shoulder into the shots, but there's very little engagement of the lower half, which accounts for his lack of power throughout his career. It often led to him lunging with a lot of his punches, because he hadn't thought to get his feet into the proper positions beforehand.

Strange, I think the total opposite, so if you could make a puncher ( according to you ) then surely all the boxers, over all the decades would have wanted to be made into a puncher, wouldn't they ? So how come it didn't happen.....

Why would Charlo's care about Benn if he were around today?

To be honest I believe it's a combination of the two. I just wanted to reverse the old maxim because I think it over-simplifies and mysticises something that's really mostly a product of technique plus some natural attributes.

As for why not everyone learns how to do that, well, not everyone wants to be a puncher is the obvious answer. There's always a trade off with any skill.

Right, to be a big puncher you've got to be willing to take big punches. A guy like Earnie Shavers threw big punches, but when he missed he often took big punches. To shift weight and commit is a "commitment" and many fighters aren't willing to make the commitment.

Also, IMO, throwing a left hook and leaving the weight on the front foot is just a bent arm jab. To really get power one needs to transfer the weight to the back foot.

Hearns was one of the best finishers ever at welter and was very hard to counter because his head movement was so good after punching, he wa easier to counter at the higher weights.

Keeping it light, sort of get your thought process, except cant really imagine any young pro just starting out being asked " do you want to be taught how to be a puncher answering, Nah not for me thanks " keep well , Michael .

Obviously you're not going to intentionally train to get no power on your shots, but to be a committed power puncher takes years and a certain mindset, and requires you to gear your whole style around it. Not everyone is built like that.

You also think if that same trainer asked those up and comers "do you want to be taught how to box like Mayweather?" they'd turn it down? Everyone wants everything, but not everyone is willing to work for it.
