    5. TKO 9 Leotis Martin-After a wildly fast and impressive start, Ellis, an underdog, and supposedly a three-round fighter got his second wind in the later rounds to stop the rugged Martin.
    4. MD 15 Jerry Quarry-Winning his third upset in a row, Ellis this time put up a great boxing demonstration, rather than mixing it up as usual, and won an MD for the title over the always-dangerous Quarry (despite a broken back). This was no fluke.
    3. UD 10 George Chuvalo-Both men were on the downside of their careers, but Ellis had enough left to make his last hurrah. Ellis took control of this fight from the very beginning, hurting Chuvalo in the 1st round, and outmaneuvering Chuvalo, slashing him with left jabs and overhand rights from round 2 on through the 6th. Chuvalo could barely touch Ellis. Ellis closed in the last 3 rounds by engaging Chuvalo in a fierce firefight for good measure.
    2. TKO 1 Johnny Persol-Though technically both were light-heavyweights, Ellis made his most tigerish performance by wasting no time and making toast of Persol, a successful light heavy now setting his sights on the heavyweight division. However, Ellis permanently ruined his career.
    1. UD 12 Oscar Bonavena-Ellis did what no one else could do to Bonavena in his prime, he easily defeated him over 12 rounds and gained 2 knockdowns. He defeated him more decisively than Joe Frazier or Muhammad Ali could. Once again a big underdog, Ellis gained a psychological edge by flooring Bonavena in the 3rd. He seemed to tire from there, and in the 10th Bonavena began a strong rally and seemed to have Ellis in trouble, but Ellis cleverly got off the ropes to floor Bonavena a second time.

Quarry, Chuvalo and Bonavena are very solid wins. How many heavyweights today could beat those fighters?

What about the Patterson win? Don't want to start the "Floyd was robbed" thread again, I actually thought Jimmy edged it and I'm a massive Patterson fan, but it was close and a great scalp.

Very few to be sure. Chuvalo was certainly easy to outbox, but today's fighters probably couldn't even rock him. Bonavena was too tough and too strong as well. Quarry was just strong and fast. Some might be able to cut Quarry up and that would cause them to win the fight on Quarry's handicap, but on a night when Quarry doesn't cut seriously, almost no one beats him. I don't even think Joshua or Fury could beat Quarry or Bonavena, and maybe not even Chuvalo.

Too late. Patterson was robbed. Jimmy should get no credit for that "victory".

The Patterson win is only a top five win on paper. When you actually watch the fight, it is one of the greatest in Floyd's career, and definitely the worst in Ellis's. Although I can agree that the fight was close in that Floyd often did nothing (especially in the middle rounds), which he often would do for long periods per round, Floyd dominated the early rounds and the late rounds. Not much happened in the middle, and Ellis did not take advantage of Patterson's occasional inactivity, and did not even keep pumping the jab. Patterson broke Ellis's nose in the 1st or 2nd, cut his eye in the 4th, and knocked him down in the 14th. Floyd hit Ellis with endless flurries in rounds 2, 4, 5, & 6. He closed impressively by dominating Ellis with dazzling speed and power in rounds 13 & 14. The only round Ellis won was the 3rd. There were probably 3 or 4 even rounds between the 7th and the 12th, but just between Patterson and Ellis, Patterson won way more.

I like you and your enthusiasm but did somebody give you a fight with the wrong labels? Ellis won one round?

As Klompton said, too late. Groundhog day. Or as they say in Sweeden, Groundhog dag.

Thank you. No. I didn't need Cosell's pro-Floyd commentary to see that Ellis was easily beaten. At the end of the fight, Ellis looked beaten up and Floyd was barely marked. I do agree that Floyd probably won a few rounds here and there due to inactivity, and it was his own fault.

Its not an amateur fight and Im not even convinced Ellis really worked enough to offset the damage Patterson was doing. Patterson won that fight.

    Jimmy Ellis top 5 wins

1- FLOYD PATTERSON , 2 TIME WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION
2- JERRY QUARRY, Number #1 Ring Magazine contender (4 months)
3- OSCAR BONAVENA, #2 Ring Magazine contender
4- GEORGE CHUVALO #3 Ring Magazine contender
5- LEOTIS MARTIN, Number #1 Ring Magazine contender (2 months)

I'm sure this is the order of their alltime heavyweight rankings.

Ellis is very underrated for his wins over Chuvalo and Quarry. He looked pretty awesome on both nights, but hardly anyone ever talks about it.
