Floyd is also a terrible match up for joe

Better counter puncher than Hopkins and much faster

Floyd would have Joe on the canvas so many times, when he dives in

It takes a rough inside guy, like Maidana or castillo to throw volume at mayweather

Joe would not throwing as much volume at floyd, he would get countered silly

Manny is a much more aggressive fighter than Joe, with more power p4p and he didn't get a chance to offload on floyd very often

Floyd's footwork is phenomenal, also he is a strong inside fighter

I'm a big fan of Joe and he would have some success for sure, I just think Floyd is much too good

Why would the world’s best fighter have pursued a relatively unknown WBO champ who was in a division that he’d left years earlier?

No PEDS can give you the gifts that Roy had.

Roy’s prime was 25 years ago and we’ve never seen anything like him since.

    Why is that?

Joe stayed away from the limelight until Roy was washed up.

Don’t imply that he couldn’t get the fight earlier.

    He didn’t want it.

Joe Calzaghe would dominate Floyd, likely stop him.

Floyd is by far the better boxer and greater fighter..............

It should be a serious thread given floyd fanboys obsession with the '0'. What does being british have to do with anything? I know a couple of people don't like Calzaghe just because he's welsh.

Why wouldn't he? Roy fought worse.

Just cancel that ****. He took them because they are performance enhancing by definition. Every fanboy (not saying you...you seem good) makes the "he didn't need them" argument. It is always, always a silly argument.

He fought in an era when PEDS testing wasn't so strict. That is why,

Again, they are the same age. What you mean is that he stayed out of the limelight until Roy could not longer take PEDs with impunity because he pissed a test in which his testosterone was several times human.

The ****? You JUST got through asking what Roy would have wanted with him? Now he could have had it any time he wanted?

Look guy, Roy was a PEDs cheat, yes it matters, and when they fought, Joe beat him. Just deal with it.

    catchwtboxing,

Roy fought low level mandatories and keep busy fights.

Why would he have actively pursued a relatively unknown fighter from a different division, who fought on a different continent?

No, I’m asking you why we haven’t seen anyone display the attributes that Roy did 25 years ago, when today’s PEDS are far more advanced?

    They aren’t the same age.

He fought Roy after saying that he was shot, and 4 years after Tarver and Johnson had beaten him.

    What are you talking about?

Again, Roy wasn’t going to pursue him. Why would he have?

I’m not saying that Joe could have fought him. But he could have pursued him.

    He didn’t.

He stayed in Britain and defended a lightly regarded WBO belt for 10 years against mostly B and C class guys, after saying that he wasn’t chasing Roy, as he didn’t want tough fights.

You initially said that Joe fought Roy after he could get him to fight.

    It’s nonsense.

He stayed away from Roy and never tried to fight him earlier.

I get Floyd took calculated risks with name opponents but his level of opposition was much greater in my opinion.

you'll never hear me say i don't think calzaghe was an excellent fighter, in fact he was the best fighter i can think of who allowed his promoter to run his career for $$$ over legacy. and therein lies the problem...

here are some of the european fighters around the time calzaghe was fighting who never crossed the pond, but got rich padding their records at home (note that all got 'a belt', because that's essential in landing lucrative home ongoing TV contracts) : ottke, sturm, steiglitz, abraham (at MW), michaelewski, and of course, calzaghe.

all of these guys campaigned between MW and LHW, but do you know how many of them fought prime jones or hopkins, the P4P kings of their era?
    not one of them.
and only calzaghe bothered once they became 'mortal'.

when i say that only british fans who lack objectivity see calzaghe as a G, that's because growing up and watching him progress can make people emotionally invested in his career to the point that they can't take criticism of the way he allowed frank warren to run his career.

it's like telling some germans that undefeated ottke wasn't what they think he was, or felix sturm, who was a 4 or 5 time 'world champion' yet never fought a top MW in his life.

^^^ Huh? How does little Floyd (career highest weight at light Middle) even dream about stinging the much bigger iron chinned Joe Calzaghe, let alone put him down?

I'm a Brit and avowed Floyd non-fan but, seriously, it's not even close, Mayweather is several notches ahead. JC just didn't take on enough [any?] top quality fighters in their prime.

Still no. Floyd lacks power, Calzaghe has an iron chin.
