It's going to be great to see the look on his face when Covington of all people totally shuts out and possibly stops him.
Don't like either one. But Woodley was far more insufferable considering he was actually a belt holder with a terribly boring style. The division went from super exciting (Lawler/Hendricks era) to terribly dire in Woodley. Not to mention the dude was totally delusional always whining about not "getting respect" throwing around the race card, making outrageous claims that he's the GOAT etc. Covington may be obnoxious and not the sharpest knife but a lot of his act if just pro wrestling shtick.
yeah I know the stuff about Woodley claiming he wasn't getting respect, but the louder guys like Covington and Conner bug me even more, but I hear you, either way Im hoping for a good fight as always.
I hate Woodley and am glad Covington gets to retire him. From the first second of rd 1 Covington will be all over him with constant volume and a gassed Woodley will be stopped later in the fight.
You and Francis75 called it exactly. You know, it's funny. BJJ scout did a video analyzing Woodley's style after Rory picked him apart. Basically, Woodley's entire style revolved around backing up to the cage and baiting his opponent to over commit to strikes, thinking they have him trapped, in order to either counter punch with his deadly overhand right or to shoot a reactive double-leg takedown. Rory, therefore, just picked apart slowly from the outside while keeping as much range as possible, landing single straight and long range shots, and using the elbow block to defend against the overhand right. By doing that, he completely nullified and embarrassed Woodley. These tendencies/strategies haven't changed at all for him. Did he evolve a tiny bit by the Till fight? Maybe... his jiu-jitsu looked a little better, but the improvements to his game were minimal at best. Truth is, Lawler was there for the taking after a hard career and even harder wars with Rory and Condit. Demian Maia was tailor made for him stylistically. The Wonderboy win was the best of his career, and we have to give him credit for that. But other than that, he's always relied on his athleticism and punching power, and was always lacking in skills. The guy is absolutely allergic to taking a step forward. It's really no wonder that with him slowing down physically, that everyone is just feasting on the guy as everyone knows how to beat this guy. Either pick him apart like Rory did, or just carefully pressure him and let him think he's setting a trap for you only to just blast him with a double-leg. Woodley really is mentally weak and a quitter of a fighter. Does NOTHING but back up to the cage and occasionally throws a big right hand hoping it lands. He fights scared imo. He knows he has a pathetic gas tank, one of the worst ever, so he's resigned to fight this way. He lost the 2nd Wonderboy Thompson fight imo so he wouldn't have had the Maia or Till title defenses on his record if the dumb judges could score correctly. In reality he should have ZERO title defense's on his record with the first Wonderboy fight being a draw. The ridiculous talk by some that he rivaled GSP as the greatest welterweight ever has to be up there as some of the greatest BS of all time.
He lost the first Wonderboy fight, was given a gift decision against Fatselum to even get a title shot to start his **** run as a make believe champ.
I scored the 1st Wonderboy fight a draw myself but agree with you that his run as Welter champ was massively overrated.
