Was Groves drugged when he faced Callum Smith

Right just watched the Groves Eubank Jr semi final fight again, Groves has always had good movement and a ring iq not to be underestimated. Add to that a chin Eubank couldn't move a mm, dangerous inside and out .

Did notice at the time Groves fought Smith he didn't look himself. Looked like a zombie in there Personally think paid off or drugged.
Or am I just being paranoid?

In the words of John McEnroe, you cannot be serious.

Honestly watched groves for years looked so far off his game in that fight makes you wonder. Not saying Callum Smith isn't a good fighter we all know he is quality. Just never seen groves fight that poorly, if you watch the semi and the final b2b you will see what I mean

Yea I watched both they fights and lots of Groves' other fights. I was quite a fan of Groves, he became one of my personal favourite fighters actually. Sometimes good fighters lose. There are a number of things you can put it down to. Whether it be just an off night, or first fight back after a serious injury, too many miles on the clock, a bit shopworn or totally shot, or maybe Smith was just the better man on the night, take your pick, but to suggest Groves was paid to take a dive or was drugged is simply ridiculous IMO. The fight was actually pretty close up until Smith hurt Groves and when he did, he smelled blood and went for the finish and got the job done. That's how I saw it anyway.

Don't disagree with you wasn't seriously saying I thought he'd been drugged, more thinking out loud as the level in performance are in a different league from his normal standard. But watching those two fights he does look like he's got magnetic boots on against Smith. Just seems strange for a fighter to drop off so much so fast

Fair enough, I do agree it was a massive difference in Groves between both of they fights. Some fighters can turn old overnight I suppose. The injury in the Eubank fight wouldn't have helped either. Even if Groves wasn't completely shot, I think he was smart enough to know his best days were behind him and that's why he called it a day after that fight. It was a clinical finish from Smith as well to give him his credit, and I'm sure Groves wouldn't have fancied any more punishment like that in the future, knowing he wasn't the same fighter he once was.

Yeah that's a totally fair comment and don't disagree. Even with the injury from the Eubank fight taken into account his movement was lazy tho man , just didn't look like he wanted it in my eyes.

enjoyed watching him over the years good fighter personally think he had a few years left in the tank. Massive drop off very fast probably was the right time for him to step back, you know when you're body starts to slide

Should really of put a bit more thought into naming the thread. Glad you know what I'm getting at

The only male member of the Ginger Race that I've ever known to take drugs is Clenelo and they were PEDs (Clebuterol) not recreational drugs. Fact is Groves was coming off shoulder surgery just 7 months earlier after suffering a career-threatening injury and to add a little perspective he was still having problems with the shoulder over a year after the fight.

That last round was testiment to his determined mindset. Took a lot of shots that round but was still firing back with one hand, got to respect that in a fighter.

Callum Smith did box well in the final so no reputation points lost there, did look like more than just injury to me. I don't mean drugged but his heart clearly wasn't in that one

No, Groves had done what he had to do in his career, the main goal, he won a world title, he managed to get himself up for the Eubank Jr fight and won well, I just think he had one too many tough fights and had the fight beaten out of him over his career.

His shoulder was a problem, I'm sure had some effect on his training and condition.

Smith had an easier ride to the final, fresher, younger, keen to prove himself, was fit with no injuries.

And Smith was just better on the night, Groves wasn't drugged or cheated, he just came to the end of his career, realised he had and retired afterwards because he knew it was over.

Mentally was more what I was getting at in my last comment. Like I said earlier should of put more thought into the thread title, but a few beers will do that.

Just such a drastic change in the two fights in such a short space of time
