Shootout is the right word for this one! Two fighters who are so similar in nearly every way - rugged, aggressive, willing to absorb punishment in order to land their own, incredible endurance. Sharkey gave Jeffries all he could handle in two bruising encounters, similar with Corbett. He was well on his way to stopping Corbett when the latter's second stepped into the ring, forcing a disqualification. Fitz seemed to have Sharkey's number but the sailor floored Fitz in both battles. Jeffries himself said that Sharkey was the toughest man he ever faced. Jersey Joe Walcott said the same about Marciano. Walcott also said that Marciano hurt you more with one punch than four by Joe Louis because the Rock put everything behind every punch. I would give the edge to Marciano for hitting power. Sharkey went 20 and 25 rounds with Jeffries in each of their battles and engaged in battles of longer duration. Marciano went 15 rounds only once, although that doesn't mean that he could not have matched Sharkey's endurance. Some of Marciano's opponents said that he wasn't as easy to hit with a clean shot as it may appear, and even Ali said the same after filming their computer fight. I envision this fight as a non-stop battle going the limit with each fighter hitting the deck. I believe Marciano's hitting power tips the scales in his favor and I would pick Rocky by UD.
Rocky would be one of the worst matchups for Tom. Both are short heavies with short arms and don't know how to fight backing up. Both are aggressive and Tom had even worse defense than Rocky with no head movement. It's a perfect recipe for disaster as Rocky finally has an opponent who won't back off or try to tie him up. Rocky utterly breaks him down round after round like an artist carving a stone statue. Tom the tough sailor is eventually sunk in 10 rounds after a gruesome blood bath with both men covered in bruises and having a completely shut eye.
In my Prime Tyson vs Tom Sharkey thread, it was established that Sharkey would likely get poleaxed by Tyson. How could he then beat Marciano??
Sharkey was to tough? Jeffries and Fitzi almost killed him and they were no close to Marciano skillset and power. Marciano by KO inside of 5 rounds like Walcott 2!
