So would we say that Povetkin is an ATG at this point?

Beat a lot of good fighters, only losses to Wlad and AJ.

A good record. This win over Whyte was unexpected and thus huge, in particular the manner in which he won. Stunning.

ATG - no - outstanding resume for never being champion yes. He has been a top 10 heavyweight now for 12 years. Had he won the wbc belt when Wilder ducked him I think he would be hof.
being that only two giants beat him - I think he would give plenty of great fighters a run for their money.
It’s a shame because having a major belt legitimizes so many guys and here is Povetkin faced much better fighters than say Wilder and he probably still is on the outside looking in for the hof. Not that Wilder is getting in, but Povetkin had to face Wlad and Joshua (at 39 no less) while Wilder got Stiverne lol. Funny how politics affects perception.

    Povetkin has an excellent resume.

No. You can't call Whyte a journeyman. No way..

Chagaev only had one loss to WK. Was a stellar amateur too...

Whyte only had one loss to Joshua.

Charr a single loss to Vitali.

Chambers was undefeated & would go onto challenge Wlad.

    Etc

No great fighters sure but I wouldn't call them all journeyman. Whyte was in most people's current top 5 prior to today.

Don't get me wrong I voted he misses it in the poll but no way can you undermine his resume to that extent.

He's a greater heavyweight than Vitali Klitschko.

I always figured that of the people who weren't trolling, myself included, or obviously deranged and trying to prop up other fighters and their resumes, I probably was the most appreciative of Povetkin...and I don't even think he's anywhere near being an ATG. Like Tua, he's got a hell of a win list for not being ever regarded as a real champion though. His "title" was so absurd, it should actually count against the sanctioning body more than for Povetkin, but he's a hell of a cool fighter, and he probably gives hell to a lot of great champions in other eras and his list of minor names and fellow contenders and performances is much deeper than I ever thought it would be, circa the time he pulled his foot off the gas to Wlad, a few years before the fight actually happened.

I am good with it whatever the pol says myself. and poor Sacha is getting killed in the poll.

What time is it in Russia? Maybe in a few hours the "squeeks past the finish line" crowd will wake up after sleeping off the vodka from the celebrations.

It is not a bad point. For the record, BOXREC has Povetkin #20 of all time, and Vitali #12.

I don't think BOXREC is the final answer, or anything, but I always think it is a good starting point, because they attempt a scientific analysis with an algorithm. I don't think that you can really judge boxers in such a fashion, but again, it is something objective to start with before discussion.

At the time he fought those men they were considered contenders. You can describe them how you want to but they weren't what I'd describe as journeymen. Don't say all his opponents are journeymen if you're going to admit that it's not the case.

Chagaev was a two time world amateur championship gold medallist and a former WBA champion with a record of 27-1 when they fought. He had beaten John Ruiz & took Yeti Valuevs 0 too.. regardless of whatever you think of those two they were both belt holders near or at the time he beat them. Good HW back in the day if a bit undersized by modern standards.

Whyte was a top 5 HW YESTERDAY.

Chambers was considered a solid 30-0 prospect at the time & would go onto challenge WK.

None of which you can describe as journeymen fighters.
