Based on what he's done so far, should Alexander Povetkin be admitted into the IBHOF? He was a great amateur, winning gold in the World Championships in 2003 and Olympic Gold in 2004. Povetkin has been in the Ring top ten heavyweight ratings for an incrediby long time, MUCH longer than any current boxer. He's had a long and successful pro career, beaten only by two top heavyweights Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua, both of whom were much bigger men. And let's not forget in the Klitschko fight, the referee was allowing Wlad to use illegal tactics, and by the time of the Joshua fight, Povetkin was nearly age 40. And he would have been WBC champion years ago if Wilder had not chickened out. Contrary to what some bigot who hates Russians might say, Povetkin did not use illegal steroids. According to VADA, which I don't completely trust, a leftover microscopic trace of meldonium (not a steroid, and had only recently been banned with Povetkin using it when it was legal) was found in his system. And let's not forget, a lot of future and current HOFers (James Toney, Tyson Fury, Roy Jones, etc) have been caught using REAL steroids. So let's not go by some double standard based on nationality when judging Povetkin.
To me, this one is a gimme. Even Ray Mancini is in the hall of fame. He's done enough just by his quality wins.
Yes, I really think he should. His resume is deep and stacked with top 10 fighters of his time. He was never “The Man” of the division, but I think he has been a comfortable 3rd/4th best in the division for a good decade now. I think he was as far above the rest during the Klitschko era, as the two brothers were above him. Still at least top 5 now, with his brutal stoppage of a game Dillian Whyte, at 40(!) years of age. For me, longevity counts a lot. No, he never won a legit World title. Kenny Norton didn’t either, rest his soul. Get Sasha in there!
HOF is trash anyway. Unless you're a pioneer time will forget you. Only boxing historians will know of you. Povetkin will be forgotten. Good little unit he's been though.
It's very debatable, granted and I understand the view point that says no, but I'll give Povetkin a yes for HOF. He was Olympic champion, WBA regular champ so proven at elite am and pro level and he's been a solid contender for about a decade now. When you think of his solid resume, he's earned it. The man goes into the backyard of favoured opponents on a regular basis. Ken Norton didn't win a title fight either, but the WBC gave his elimination win over Jimmy Young title recognition months later. Ken's in the HOF for his trilogy against Ali as much as anything.
