MUST WATCH BOXING SURVEY - FINAL RESULTS

That's not my list lmao.

 

Thank you. I figure, if this is a list to get someone to love boxing, then some of the more contemporary guys deserve a viewing too. Boxing is past and present and there are a multitude of things to appreciate.

 

Actually, I was thinking more of Muhammad-Lopez I, Monzon-Briscoe II, and Starling-Honeyghan. I can't see many people putting them up that high.

 

I never took this as ‘these are the best 25 fights of all time’ — which depending on your criteria could be all over the place.

I took my list as 25 fights I’d suggest everyone watch. Some are barnburners. Some are historic (how can Buster Douglas-Mike Tyson not be part of someone’s introduction/education on boxing?). Some are technical masterpieces. Some I just like and would want to share.

And, sadly, some don’t qualify because there’s not enough film.

 

Mine is my 25 favourite fights - plain and simple. Some are historically significant but that was not the criteria I used for selecting them. I figured that they were must watches because they were all super exciting fights whether high class technical battles or complete slugfests so if someone new to boxing watches them and is left cold, maybe this isn't the sport for them.

 

Those are the ones I was referring to.

HDmex's Must Watch in Boxing (my personal take)
(I'm new here but wanted to throw in my 2 cents in to what can be regarded as some of the must watch fights of all time. I'm excited to share with others who also are a great fans of this craft. Also will include about a few sentence long elevator pitch to why these fights are so great/important.)

1. Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier III "The Thrilla in Manilla" (The end to an epic trilogy. The stakes were high, and as Ali puts it, this fight was the closest to death that both have them have felt. And it was all left out in the ring for the entire time. This could have gone either way, but one decision of a corner being made before the other makes this bout more drama filled than any other in my opinion and is still the standard to what boxing should be and what boxing still tries to be.)

2. Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward I (No titles, 10 rounds, 2 warriors laying it all on the line. This fight still brings me out of my seat and a tear to my eye to this day. We will never get a fight like this again. Every boxer who establishes their legacy, has a dance partner to bring the best out of them Gatti and Ward were made for this.)

3. Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns (This fight was War in every sense of the word. And it is only 3 rounds. This match is the go to reference when people want to call something of high stakes and ferocity, and after you watch it you will figure out why.)

4. Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier I (The battle between two undefeated and in prime boxers. Ali the former champion who lost his title for his beliefs and was sent into suspension coming back to face the new champion in Frazier. This was a great contest and the start to something amazing between these two warriors.)

5. Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo I (Action, beauty, heart, and more. You will get all sorts of emotions in this fight and round 10 in of itself is worth the price of admission)

6. Julio Cesar Chavez vs Meldrick Taylor I (High impact drama where anything can happen at any time. This fight is infamous for the ending, but how they got there is apart of that same great story where people's opinion have shifted over the years.)

7. Sugar Ray Robinson vs Carmen Basilio II (Toughness and grit personified with an older Sugar Ray going against the younger Basilio with one of the worst cuts you will ever see in the sport. But Grit is what you will get in this bout.)

8. George Foreman vs Ron Lyle (When people think slugfest, this should be the fight. Ignore the strategy, and sweet science, these are 2 men, standing toe to toe throwing bricks. Multiple knockdowns in each round to see who can survive the longest.)

9. Jack Johnson vs James J. Jefferies (The First Fight of the Century, with the biggest racial and social stakes being played, and in the end, it turned to the biggest ass whooping for the First Black Heavyweight Champion against the "Great White Hope" in Jefferies who came out of retirement to try and stop this "black menace" who was tarnishing the sport. But Jack Johnson doesn't care, he destroyed the former champion and showed that just because you aren't white in America, you are not inferior.

10. Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns I (The super fight of the welterweight division, 2 out of the 4 kings finally meeting up in a fight where the tide can change in an instant. This fight is a gift that it was scheduled for 15 rounds)

11. Erik Morales vs Marco Antonio Barrera I (This to me is the standard for great Mexican Rivalries and this fight shows why. the definition of a barn-burner. Fast paced and filled with action)

12. Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello I (An excellent fight masked in controversy unfortunately. But it truly shows how well these two people complemented each other. The power puncher in Pryor vs the tactician in Arguello.)

13. Evander Holyfield vs Riddick Bowe II (Come for the fan man, stay for the boxing.)

14. Larry Holmes vs Ken Norton I (Holmes told me when I interviewed him years ago that this was his proudest fight in his career, and it showed, this great heavyweight rivalry stands the test of time as two men who laid it all on the line for the belt. High octane action and methodical. Excellent watch.)

15. Rocky Marciano vs Jersey Joe Walcott I (The Rock's biggest fight imo, where we see a hard fought contest between 2 competitors following the Joe Louis Era. The early knock down from Walcott in the 1st to the final fight ending Suzie Q at the end, shows that anything can happen at any moment in the heavyweight division.)

16. Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman "The Rumble in the Jungle" (The story behind this is huge with Ali coming to face the fiercer version of Mike Tyson of his day of George Foreman, if people think that Prime Tyson's aura was intimidating, to me, Foreman's was much greater. Ali would become the 2nd person ever to regain his championship in the heavyweight division after this, using the famous rope-a-dope tactics to tame the beast that is Foreman, a great watch for hidden strategy that was unknown for the time and an institution for today.)

17. Willie Pep vs Sandy Saddler I (Boy this one is a gem of the old school, great action. A bit dirty in times but it adds to the drama. Sandy a young lion of the division takes on the institution of the featherweight division. This was a big upset and turns out to be Pep's kryptonite, but great bouts nonetheless.)

18. Joe Louis vs Billy Conn I (The Famous "you can run but you can't hide" bout. When Joe Louis was on his Bum of the Month Tour, there was one man who came up from Light Heavyweight to give him a great change of pace and took the fight to the champion that he didn't encounter for a long time. This is that moment in an anime where a fighter get's caught by something astonishing for the first time in a while and feels that rush to go beyond for the first time in a long time. "What is this feeling, an actual challenge? This is going to be fun."

19. Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvelous Marvin Hagler (A great fight that is still debated to this day, a must watch for you to keep record at home and able to keep you inthralled throughout.)

20. Gene Tunney vs Jack Dempsey II (The famous, battle of the long count. Styles make fights and this one delivered.

21. Israel Vazquez vs Rafel Marquez III (One of the most underrated rivalries in all of boxing, the 3rd fight was captivating and the action was nonstop. Because of this it stapled Showtime Boxing as an institution for the lighter weight classes)

22. Hernan Marquez vs Luis Concepcion I (I'll be honest, this might have more sentimental value for me. This was the last fight that I watched on TV with my Papa before he passed. And we loved every minute of it. The Spanish Broadcast went nuts throughout as we saw these two Flyweights put it all on the line. Not really mentioned much, but honestly a fantastic watch.)

23. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquiao IV (A bow tied expertly to a rivalry. Multiple knockdowns that lead to one of the most brutal KOs in boxing history. The story is worth it and in the end, did the better man come out on top? That's for you to decide.)

24. James Buster Douglas vs Mike Tyson (The biggest upset of all time still, watching how a man following the death of his mother rose to the occasion and defeated one of the most intimidating fighters shrouded in destructive power)

25. Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling II (imo the most world captivating fight ever, more people were tuned into this fight than anything else, it has a great story behind it of redemption for Louis and for the time of the US vs Nazi Germany before the actual war, tensions were high and the symbolism was immense.)
