Would Muhammad Ali have been Dropped by Povetkin's Left Hook?

If it hit him flush on the chin it would knock him out, it would knock anyone out who gets hit flush by it, but Ali would not get hit flush by it

 

If Povetkin landed it clean I think he'd sit Ali down.

 

Not against prime Clay/Ali he wouldn't. I should add "IMO". Liston landed a few bombs on Clay in their first contest and Clay took them with aplomb. Later Ali took bombs from the likes of Frazier, Foreman, Lyle and others brilliantly. Even over the hill he shipped monstrous punches from Shavers.

If he was caught clean like Whyte was Ali would get knocked down, but unlike Whyte Ali would get back to his feet and keep fighting.

 

Cooper was pre-Liston. Ali pumped him 3 years later. Alexander would not be fighting the Cooper version.

 

Ali was my favourite boxer, however i concur with BCS8 regarding Our Enrys punch putting Clay as he was then known on silly street, i frankly am unsure if Clay would have survived the round if (1) the punch had landed away from the ropes which absorbed Clays decent to the canvas and (2) if it had been earlier in the round as Cooper was the consumate professional and was very capable of finishing his handwork, however we know that Alis recuperative powers were of course par excellence, possibly aided by a torn glove, very observant was our Mr Angelo Dundee

I realistically can't see Povetkin landing his shot on a focused Ali, however if Ali doing his showboating, holding etc then am sure Povetkin would take advantage of any opening that arose, Povetkin has both excellent technique and a powerful wallop, that is a fine combination for any boxer to have.

But hey Ali is invincible i read the DC comic of his winning the fight with Superman, Povetkin or Cooper couldn't do that

 

I agree that Povetkin might have stylistic problems with Ali. He likes fighters that fight him, not so much movers and huggers. Ali was also relatively difficult to tag cleanly at his best, so the question is more of how much power could Sasha connect with rather than would a clean shot put Ali down. Wlad really frustrated him with his clinch, and its possible that Ali would do so too.

 

True but Wlad had the extra height, weight and strength too, Ali was of course not lacking in power but Wlad was a very powerful unit, built one could say to fight in the way he did, pretty it wasn't but successful it was.

If Ali had respect for Povetkins power, then i think he would have had a strategy to nullify/avoid it, if however he didn't respect it, then Povetkin would give him good reason to do so.

Povetkins skills and boxing brain cannot be overlooked, he was/is not just a heavy banger, he is a dangerous opponent for any heavyweight.

 

But everyone keeps bringing up Henry Cooper's left hook in 1963, that is getting old. It was a legitimate knockdown, but Ali was clowning with Henry, he did not take him seriously, he got caught for toying with him. The Sonny Banks and Joe Frazier left hooks were very legitimate. When Ali fought Cooper again in 1966, Ali did not go down from Henry's left hook, he did not play with Henry in this fight, he gave Cooper 14 stitches.

 

I won’t predict a yes or no outcome. But yes it’s possible that a Povetkin left hook could cause a knockdown.
