This vid shows the gap in class between Howard Davis Jr and McGirt, being an olympic gold medalist doesn`t mean you`re automatically good enough to win a world title, what percentage of olympic gold medalist at 140 and 145 from the past could have beaten McGirt after having as many pro bouts Davis had took part in before meeting Buddy? That fight...I watched it in Las Vegas and I had a bet on the over. I thought that, if ever a fight was going the distance, it was that one. Buddy freaking McGirt. I'm thinking that this is the first time I've watched the fight since then, even though I'm a big fan of McGirt.
Lets not kid ourselves that this was Howard Davis at his best. He looked subpar against Camacho a couple of years prior and certainly hadn't improved. Great effort by McGirt to win in the manner he did. Guy could fight.
there was no gap in class. Davis was a class guy, and a great boxer. He's gotten caught in a few fights, but he was a very skilled boxer. Not the greatest chin maybe, not the most lethal puncher, but a fine boxer and a fine man
If you want to be technical, any form of Davis after the Rosario fight wasn't totally top notch. He had to lose a lot of weight to fight Rosario on a short notice, and in additon, had to fight him in Puerto Rico. If he had the right trainer ( hint no father) he could have done better. I could see him beating Camacho up to the end of 1983 or so.
