Worse 6 defenses and a title won in a row, is there any worse than Wilder?

Personally, I think the bar for a champion is to defend against his nr. 1 challenger every year.

Out of the five years Floyd was reigning champion he did this three years and one of the two years that he failed to was because of a rematch clause with Ingo, so I'll give him a pass for that one. That leaves one year, '58, when he defended against the nr. 3 instead of the nr. 1.

He probably could have been, but he hadn't earned a shot in '58. I don't think he was even ranked in the top 10 by either The Ring or NBA.

EDIT: The Ring ranked him nr. 9 for the year of '58, but since he hadn't fought for nearly two years when the year started he likely entered the ranking towards the end of the year.

Tied up the title for 3 years playing pass the parcel withIngo whilst challengers like Machen,Folley and Liston had to wait on the sidelines.

Bottom line, who would you pick to win in58? Floyd redeemed himself as an ex champ, but his reign was pretty scandalous imo.

I do like this thread, and added to it. The leave comment was directed to complaining about a thread title and theme. Let me guess, you're a Wilder fan and I touched a nerve.

Not only were Wilder's title opponents undeserving, his resume on his first 15 fights is a joke as 10 of them were .500 or below. This is a continuation of a suspect resume, starting at the beginning. The best people Wilder fought were likely Fury and Stiverne ( 1st fight ). He failed to stop them in 3 matches. While I think Wilder is a big puncher, its obvious his KO% is highly inflated for reasons I mentioned. Suspect competition at ALL phases of his career relative to his standing.

Patterson fought Liston and Ali twice! And Ingo three times. If your trying to say Patterson competition was worse than Wilders, just come out and say it. That's 100% wrong. I don't mind an easy title defense or two as long as the champion faces the best and gives re-matches when needed which is what Patterson did.

Much, much better than Johnson's and Dempsey's. Dempsey's was absolutely scandalous, Floyd's far from it. The decision to defend against Harris rather than Folley/Machen is the one I mainly have an issue with.

Liston would be my pick in '58, with the benefit of hindsight.

And then it was tied up for almost two years because the rematch clause that Liston and Floyd had. And then again for Liston-Ali. Those were unfortunately the breaks back then.

Harris was a ranked guy, 4th I believe when Patterson gave him a title shot.

I think Harris was nr . 3, but can't find where I got that from. He was coming off a win over Pastrano, anyhow, and certainly at the peak of his career.

Folley or Machen would have been a better defence, though.

And Wilder is preparing to fight Fury for a third time. Everything you listed is outside the scope of this topic except the first Ingo fight and Ingo is only regarded as more than a one-hit wonder because Patterson had a glass jaw.

Out of scope. Didn't you laud Eddie Machen? Well Ingo, a 1 hit wonder to use your words KO'd him in one round!

Sure Wilder will fight Fury for the third time. He's in decline and never was that good to begin with. That's Wilder's top money fight. I would rather Wilder fight another contender first who's not 40 as he's likely to lose, and that might make Fury vs AJ happen sooner.

Wilder has a glass jaw too. The shot that Fury landed in round 3 was nothing special. Fury isn't a big puncher, yet it turned Wilder's legs into spaghetti. Ortiz if he was 3-4 years younger and not 40+ years old would have beaten Wilder too.

In terms of competition fought Patterson > Wilder.

In terms of Legacy Patterson > Wilder.

If we are talking title runs, neither were very good, however Patterson won his title vs. a better fighter ( Moore ) , and defeated Ingo in a title defense, who is better than anyone Wilder beat.

Patterson also won some significant non title fights, Wilder never did.

Um, Wilder fought 10 men .500 or under. McNeely was a fraud as a contender but he can qualify as a journeyman as he has a winning record. What you are saying is false.
