You should approach a few top boxers and tell em you’ll do everything a manager does but only take 25%.. your pitch is watertight you’ll soon have quite the stable.
ah **** up. This isn’t twitter so If you’ve nothing meaningful to post. if I was a manager I’d hire you to seduce the opposition on fight week , so you get your ass rammed in all week, and they lose the fight due to their shaky legs. I’d bring you in for wilder first.
Steve Wood is a good bloke, but he's got his fingers in a lot of pies boxing wise as he has a gym, sells branded gear and also promotes a lot of small hall stuff. Good guy though, does right by his boxers.
Quite a few fighters I know have agents (advisers) on a % now as well as managers. So you have a coach on 10%, a manager on 25%, another 20% going to the promoter and then an agent on ? % of any commercial deals they can get them. Then they have additional specialist coaches like myself during camp plus nutritionists and physiotherapist etc. To answer the OP, managers primarily agree the matchmaking and negotiate the fighters contract with the promoter - purse, rematch clauses, tv revenue % and personal terms likes gloves, dressing rooms etc.
10 per cent to a trainer is outrageous considering the work put in. I would have thought the manger would also do the agents job.
The dreaded football agents have moved into boxing unfortunately. Managers used to have a lot more say on commercial deals, sponsorship, appearances etc but the agents have seen an opportunity. Managers have a badge to steal a fighters money. The team of Sam Pian & Art Winch, were Frank & Jessie James reincarnated. In their stable they had Earl Mastro, Barney Ross, Davey Day and Tony Zale, just to mention a few,and a hundred others from 1928 and on. All their fighters ended up broke. Zale and Ross had gates over $150,000. Tony alone had gates up to $500,000 and never knew his end. They got to fight in MSG when Pian & Winch made deals with Uncle Mike Jacobs (promoter) who demanded they'd be under contract to him as well, as he was boss over every fighter in NY. Pian & Winch were the guys who took Jacobs out of a dilapidated one room dump office to a swanky office uptown. When Ross fought Jimmy McLarnin started all. Also, they let Henry Armstrong fight Ross for welterweight title, bypassing Davey Day from having to fight him first, for a chance at Ross. As you had to fight Mr. Day (policeman of Barney) and beat him to get a crack at Ross' Title. Lou Ambers, Pedro Montanez, Henry Armstrong and a dozen others, all wanted to fight Barney, but, wouldn't fight Mr. Day. They made a deal with Eddie Mead manager of Armstrong and Mike Jacobs, for big payday est. $150,000 for the Rosschild stable and making Armstrong, Mike Jacobs house champion for the next 5 yrs. Mike controlled all the Champions, NYSAC, referees, and sportswriters in the Big Apple. What a racket.
