Sanders would have Flynn out in one round. Flynn was nothing more than a short, skinless try hard type with some power. I'd pick modern middleweight over Flynn.

You are comparing Marciano, Tyson and Tua to Flynn? That is funny! The best comparison is the three would KO him inside of three rounds.

Flynn had but a 69" reach and limited tough-man like skills. His power was not anything special. I have not counted, but can you name me one heavyweight who was Ko'd more often? Flynn was Ko'd 26 times. He must have been down well over 50. times. The poor guys skeleton must be ringing like a large sea shell.

 

Demspey over Sanders in 1 round? That's highly unlikely. Sanders wasn't a stiff like Willard, and had a solid level chin, lasting many rounds vs Klitschko and Rhaman for example.

W Klitschko would be a 100-1 favorite over Flynn. It's not even a fight, it's a slaughter. Wlad also would not let a guy like Meehan win a round.

Flynn doesn't rate with Sanders for power, size, speed or skills. Not even close.

In another fight Demspey was down multiple times.

Sharkey who was not puncher clearly rocked Demspey. Tunney would have Ko'd Demspey if the match was 15 rounds. As the end of the fight, Dempsey asked where Tunney was to shake his hand, and declined a 3rd fight offer by Tunney.

The reality is Corrie Sanders sure could beat Dempsey.

If Sanders and Flynn are indeed analogous fighters from disparate eras, that just goes to show you the gulf in relative quality between those eras.

 

Do you really think it is as simple as that? If any good fighter fights mostly 50-50 fights throughout his career he will do well to finish better than 50-50. I would like to see Sanders stats if he fought the Klitchko brothers five times each, if he fought Hasim Rahman three times. And that’s without asking if he also fought as many of the best men of his era as Fireman Jim had during his era because as you know Holyfield, Lewis, Grant, Golota, Tua, Morrison, Moorer, Foreman, Bruno And Bowe are notably absent from the record of Corrie Sanders.

You have to remember, One guy fought 141 times in an era where it was a virtual free for all.

There were no set ups to get a good fighter started or any kind of the development within a regulated amateur programme of junior and senior tournaments like modern fighters grow up with. Flyn was probably straight out of the western saloons where men passed a hat and a kid learned to fight on the job that way before taking real organised fights in the semi legal underground “sport” that boxing was then.

He fought name fighters all the time. Many of them many times over. A guy would fight anyone then. Thrown into the deep end in back to back fights and somehow score stunning wins against men who had already beat him.

Flyn and guys like him were very tough. They fought with tiny gloves that gave no real room for mistakes. Upsets were more likely when you see how they wrapped their hands and what was (or wasn’t) protective about 5oz horsehair gloves where often 3oz of the stuffing went into the cuff rather than the knuckle part of the glove.

Let me tell you, If fighters today hit each other with bag mitts you would see a lot more unexpected results. Flyn fought for so many more years and against mostly the best level of fighters. He was a full time fighter who lived from purse to purse in the olden days. The fireman was not a three matches a year kind of guy who might have been supported by sponsorship deals to train all the time. He fought all comers all the time. From purse to purse. Scoring many unexpected results that show he must have been decent all along.

 

Raise corrie sanders on a diet of 80% cabbage and turnips and give him a day job while he trains and let us know if he's the same fighter

 

Jim Flynn was a warrior who fought everyone and beat/upset many top fighters of his time. Definitely a guy you wanted to take seriously
