He is a completely different fighter now, he uses his feet and his height and reach advantage, the Fury which beat Wilder in the rematch would’ve dealt with Cunningham easily, another thing, Fury changes his lead, he might feint, he might jab to the body, he may double jab, he may lead left hook, he may throw a stiff jab, he may flick a jab, you don’t know what’s coming first, he also gets his punches off then ties his opponent up, Louis don’t do any of that, he is a good basic fighter, he don’t do all that technical stuff, plus Fury has an 8 inch height advantage and a 65-70lbs weight advantage, how does Louis beat Fury?
The Cunningham fight was 7 years ago, Fury is a completely different fighter now, Fury changes his lead, he might feint, he might jab to the body, he may double jab, he may lead left hook, he may throw a stiff jab, he may flick a jab, you don’t know what’s coming first, he also gets his punches off then ties his opponent up, Louis don’t do any of that, he is a good basic fighter, he don’t do all that technical stuff, plus Fury has an 8 inch height advantage and a 65-70lbs weight advantage, how does Louis beat Fury?
Cunningham was world ranked. He was no journeyman, but he was incredibly featherfisted. Edit: sorry, he wasn't world rated. My mistake. He was however, coming off a pretty controversial decision over someone as high as five, so I assumed. My mistake. I had the Adamek rematch 116-112 for USS IIRC.
Louis feinted plenty, you would need to watch his fights more carefully. Louis could do more than basic things. Watch Louis's tripe left hook vs Max Baer. It isn't basic and i am willing to bet no one today can do that. How does Louis beat Fury? Louis demonstrated power to stop big guys like Budy Baer who was 6'6 250 lbs. I agree Budy was not as skilled as Fury but Baer was a huge puncher (more so than Fury) and had never been stopped before. Remember Tyson had the power to ko 250 lb guys when he himself was 215-220 lbs. Louis was about 207 lbs before WW2 at 28 years old and at his peak. With modern weight lifting and nutrition, Louis is probably the same size as Tyson. Do i think Louis has almost the same raw power as a crude Wilder? Yes. The difference is Louis is a better two handed hitter, has far better hand speed and more accuracy. Louis beats Fury because Fury's size is a disadvantage vs a smaller hitter like Louis. Louis would break down his body, and finish him with combinations on top. Do i give Fury a chance? Yes, of course. I would never write Fury off. I give him a 20% chance of winning a decision here, i do not count him out. I just think Louis is a higher level puncher and boxer than Wilder and i just don't think Fury is proven enough for me to favour him over Louis.
Louis cannot box Fury from range that is a fact, and Louis would most likely be forced back by that 273lbs jab from Fury and every time Louis would step in fury would just step back, plus Louis has slow feet, if Louis were to try come forward, Fury would just meet him and when they got close Fury would clinch him and use that 70lbs weight advantage, and Louis wouldn’t be able to push Fury off, the only way Id give Louis a Chance is if he had fast feet, he may be able to counter fury on the back foot make him miss then spring in fast feet with combos, but Louis don’t have fast feet, I see him trying to counter on the back foot but his counters would be falling short because of his slow feet and huge reach and height disadvantage
This. I can’t believe people are comparing Cunningham, who I like, but Cunningham on his best day is no Joe Louis. Joe Louis was a complete fighter and pretty much fought almost all styles and opponents of all sizes. Fury’s size, ability, and experience are nothing Joe Louis hasn’t seen before. Fury manhandled Cunningham, but he wouldn’t manhandle Louis. Wilder put Fury on his back with one of the most telegraphed combinations I’ve ever seen. It wouldn’t be pretty once Louis started lighting Fury up with combinations from every angle. Also, all this revisionism that former heavyweight champions that were twice as ambitious as champions today and that never fought under a weight limit were cruiserweights is laughable. If anything the division was much tougher back in the 1930’s, since there was more competition without the division being split in half.
Fury has a couple of outstanding wins, but he still have a very thing resume against contenders. It would still be premature to pick him overt all time greats.
Cunningham was nobody in the heavyweight division with featherfists. Othewise Fury was down by the bum Pajkic also. Otherwise an under 200 lbs Louis destroyed Carnera who was much more stronger than the fat ass Fury.
First of all, Cunningham had faster hands and feet than Louis and was better on the back foot and better at counterpunching in the back foot, that was what gave fury the issues, not coming forward and applying pressure, Fury was walked on to a punch and that was 7 years ago, Fury is a completely different fighter now, he uses his height and reach, he feints, he may throw a jab, he may throw a double jab he may flick a jab, he may throw a stiff jab, he may throw a lead hook, you just don’t know what Fury is gonna do, I don’t see Louis doing all that technical long range boxing stuff, plus Fury’s 70lbs and 8.5inch reach advantage, how does Louis win? When Louis steps in Fury would just take a step back and Louis doesn’t even have fast feet anyway to close the distance and even when Louis does get in, which would be very unoften, Fury would just tie him up easily, if Louis tried to counter Fury, it wouldn’t work, the counters would bee falling short and a Fury ain’t stupid enough to punch and lean in and fall into Louis range, I just see Fury controlling the fight from range and sticking that 273lbs jab in the 205lbs Louis face all night and playing it safe
This is the first time I've seen someone trying to argue that Louis can't fight on the backfoot. Also, Cunningham having faster hands than Louis is quite strange opinion. Louis had arguably the fastest hands in HW history.
Carnera was harder puncher also. Maybe you don't know Fury's pathetic deadlift performance but i think Carnera had significantly bigger muscle mass and power.
Deadlift 1rep max isn’t always relevant in terms of in the clinch because deadlift is a pull motion but when you’re in a clinch it’s a punishing motion and it’s generally who weighs more who is stronger in the clinch and there are exceptions but that is generally how it goes
Fury would get demolished by an avalanche of Louis combinations. Nobody threw them more concisely than Louis, and (though Louis isn't QUITE the puncher Wilder is), if Tyson gets floored hard by two shots, a four or five shot combination by Louis keeps him down. To be completely straightforward, I doubt Fury could have taken such a combo from prime Iron Mike, either.
Louis is not even top 3, let alone no. 1. Where did you come up with this crap ?!? Ali, Patterson and Tyson are the top 3.
