Joe Louis vs Tyson Fury

Fury beats Louis with ease.

 

You're wrong, he doesn't hit anywhere near as hard. Although Wilder doesn't have the best technique, he has those really long hands which he uses to create leverage, kinda like a whip backlashing, thus generating huge punching power.
Hearns had a similar physique and punching power.

Louis ain't as good as Tyson coming in, so he won't be able to get under Fury's punches in order to land his. Louis gets pummeled when he tries to get close. Plus Fury moves a lot better than him which coupled with his superior size and reach means he'll outpoint Louis with relative ease. And if somehow Louis ever manages to get inside, Fury will tie him up, manhandle him in clinches and use his weight to lean on Louis, which will eventually take a huge toll on Louis.

It is Louis who has a 20 percent chance at best.

1) Sorry i do not buy the power argument. Louis was a very hard hitter who knocked out durable guys who were never stopped before. Wilder has fought tomato cans. I am willing to bet Louis hits just as hard as Wilder. Regardless, Louis's handspeed and combination punching is on another level.

2) Louis does not need to get underneath or move his feet at the speed of Mike Tyson. Louis had long arms, his reach was somewhere between 77 inch reach, much longer than Tyson. How many serious body punchers has Fury faced? How many fast handed combination punchers has Fury faced?

Fury leaning on Louis could wear him down. Convesely, Fury leaning forward could open himself to Louis's 5-6 punch combinations to the body. Lets see how the 270 lb body holds up when those combinations land to the body.


3) No one is being nostalgic. Look at the Usyk thread, most people are favouring him over most 30's heavyweights. There is a tendency among some people to underrate past greats just like some people overrate them.

 

There is not a big difference between him and these 3. You act like you have scientific proofs that they are faster.

 

What is funny is that people who call oldschool fighters bad and untrained, here try to defend Wilder to make him look better than Louis. Wilder isn't half of the fighter Louis was from technical perspective.

 

I don't have scientific proof, nobody has, but the eye tests certainly suggests that.

 

I haven't seen people claim Wilder is more technical. IMO he does however hit way harder.

 

Eye test is very subjective, especially given that Louis footage is in worse quality and lower frame rate than Tyson's.

 

I saw on Fury on the boxing show To the Max where he was on talking about new prospects. He's not very tunned who does what well in boxing and would need to take Louis very seriously. Kellerman asked Fury how long he's going to be in the game and if Fury worries about missing out on the young guns. Fury didn't care.

While Fury does have the style, movement, and size to give Louis fits, Louis is certainly greater. This new super heavyweight are essentially 2-3 weight classes above the traditional 6'1 200-pound heavyweights. A tall order, the smaller man better have some serious power. Louis unquestionably did.

In this case, I think Louis would land his bomb behind on points and win. Fury was down and had issues with Cunningham, an older blown up Cruiserweight. Louis is not a give up type, nor did he gas. He'll keep pressing it until landing what he needs.

I do not deny Fury's ability, but I think he's vastly overrated. He beat an old Klitschko and a Wilder who history won't remember fondly. He needs to beat Joshua and 2-3 more ranked top ten opponents. If he does that, he'll get the respect the better champions have.

 

As usual, you vastly overrate raw power. Louis hit hard enough that he could knock out a 240 lbs behemot with one punch. He stopped Buddy Baer in one round and Buddy was huge and very durable, for all of his weaknesses.

I don't think anyone is clearly more devastating puncher than Louis. He made terrible things to fighters who were very hard to stop, often to the ones who were bigger than him.

 

People can't seem to grasp that the bout ends whichever way Tyson Fury wants it to.

If he wants to go for the knockout, it ends by knockout. If he wants to outbox Joe Louis, he wins by decision.

 

When did Fury ever beat someone even close to Louis in terms of styles and abilities? Old Wladimir is not enough to favor him over peak Louis.

 

I am willing to bet he doesn't. Physics also supports Wilder as the harder puncher.

Louis might have a longer reach than Mike, but it's still small compared to that of Fury, about 8 inches separates them.

What makes you think Fury isn't smart enough to also tie him up when he leans on him ?!?

Why would people not favor him ?! It's obvious he'd beat a lot of them with ease.

 

I don’t care how much power he possesses,Wilder is not in the same league as Joe Louis as a puncher.
Joe Louis is the greatest pure puncher in the history of the heavyweight division.
I happen to think with his ring smarts and sheer size Fury would be a real obstacle to overcome for Louis, but he’d better be on his game otherwise he’ll be taken out.

 

I'm not saying that Joe Louis is worse than Tyson Fury - more so that you cannot compare eras so far apart. You are only a product of your own era. If we are being honest, Joe Louis is unlikely to get near a Tyson Fury who approaches the bout with a serious mindset.
