I don’t know. Norton paid his dues more in the division, I just think there is a reason why he never got to win a title fight. He could beat the best, he showed this against Ali, but not when it counted over the championship distance.

If anyone thinks Jimmy Young really beat Norton then they must also believe Michael Spinks was better than Young. Because he was.

Ken Norton was awarded the WBC Title belt by virtue of his split 15 round decision win over Jimmy Young on November 5 1977. Then Larry Holmes beat Ken for the title on June 9 1978.

He was a boxer-puncher at Lt. heavy. Not heavyweight.

There were mitigating circumstances involving Cooney in that fight. That was NOT the Cooney who fought Norton or Holmes, watch the fight again and you'll see what I mean. Check out some other threads here concerning that fight and you'll see the whole picture.

Spinks fought Holmes 30 rounds and never once actually hurt him. And he landed plenty.

Spinks is cute for the first six rounds and lands plenty but never even backs Norton up. Starting in the 7th Norton turns it on, by the 9th Kenny's basically walking through him.

Spinks stopped in the 10th...at the very latest. Michael just didn't have the power to keep Ken off him.

The Spinx Jinx starched many a light heavyweight, but he could not do the same to a well past primed Larry Holmes in 1985 and 1986. Michael just did not have the punch to keep a jaw busting Ken Norton off of him.

Cooney was completely shot and mentally fragile by the time he fought Spinks . I'm sure you know that. Stop the nonsense.

Spinks took this fight instead of his mandatory against Tony Tucker a smart financial move if not one that reflected glory on him.

I read somewhere that he got $4 million to fight Cooney and was offered only half a million to fight Tucker.
