Joe Louis vs Tyson Fury

Seriously? Much better?

 

There is no proof, but most people assume it to be true.

 

Could you please tell us @Johnny_B why modern fighters like Holyfield are better boxers than Louis? What did Holyfield do better than Louis? What were Louis weaknesses that made him more vurnelable than Evander? Please, for once stop talking about size, chin and power. Tell us what makes Holyfield better boxer.

 

Holy might have been, besides Louis, Ali, and Holmes (and possibly Foreman) the greatest champ ever. However, I don't place him head to head winning against the first three names.

Louis was a far better fighter than Bowe...I doubt I'd get many arguments against that. Holy at his peak a sensational all-around warrior...but he wasn't a Joe Louis, baby.

Just my opinion.

 

There is proof Louis hit much harder than Holyfield. Louis stopped guys who had not been stopped before (e.g. Max Baer). Holyfield didn't, atleast not that i can recall.

Its evident on film, watch the left hook to the body and right hand to the head combination.

Louis was a puncher in Tyson's class. Holyfield was a notch below though he was a hard hitter as well.

No one who has seen their footage will argue that Louis's 5-6 punch power combinations were not a step above Holyfields.

 

Holyfield had a much better defense than Louis, I saw him roll with the punches many times, he was a bit faster and moved a lot better in the ring, plus he was more versatile.
Louis would not be able to land as much on Holyfield the way he did on the stiffs from his era.

 

He was *much* stronger than Fury.
"ripped" tends to imply very defined/low body fat.
Carnera weighed between 260 & 284 in his bouts from what I heard, & recently Fury was right in between that.
Although somewhat taller. And with much more body fat.
Carnera was "literally" a Strongman before boxing.

Before steroids or human growth hormone was every invented, without modern training or nutrition-& so without getting muscles inprobably large & less functional for his massive bone structure-he was naturally massive.
The tales of what he could lift-it was some huge amount with a single dumbell-easily outstrip what Fury could ever do.

Yet I understand that in the clinch Lous handled him & picked him up & Carnera said to him "I'm supposed to being doing this to you".

The average Fury opponent is much bigger than the average Louis opponent... which should be obvious to everybody!

 

So you've never seen Louis rolling with the punch?

More versatile in what? What Evander did that Louis wasn't able to?

 

Not as good as Holy.

Evander could brawl, box, counter-punch, could fight inside. He had a far better chin, better footwork, with good lateral movement, he could slip and and slide and he had good timing too. And he was timing good HWs with great movement, not the slow stiffs Louis was fighting.

If he hadn't taken PEDs, my appreciation for Holy would be a lot higher.

This is not a boxing skill.

In what way better? Louis set up his punches better and more fluidly. Although I agree that Holyfield used lateral movement more, he rarely took an advantage of it. Holyfield didn't try to box you from outside, he was a highly skilled counter puncher - like Louis. Louis footwork was better suited to this style because it allowed him to be always in perfect position to counter or to attack.

So you're trying to tell me that Louis couldn't spli and slide? Or that Louis didn't have good timing?

Louis usually fought faster and quicker opponents than Holyfield.

 

If you really believe that, then I think we should end our debate right here.
The vast majority of his opponents were stiff slow jokes.

You are aware Holyfield was out boxed by the likes of Bowe, Moorer, Ruiz, Lewis and Donald. Furthermore he struggled to out box Vahugn Bean. He's not a master boxer. Technically speaking Louis was much better, faster handed and hit a lot harder.

The only thing Holyfield does better in my opinion as a boxer offensively speaking is counter punch. Louis has the better jab hook ,right hand and uppercut.

 

Louis usually fought smaller, but quicker and faster men. It's not my fault that your brain can't process black and white footage.

 

I'm a fan of Fury's work - especially of late - but he's not beating Joe Louis.
