Seen Dokes-Weaver 2? Difficult to score and kind of tedious. There seemed to be a tacit agreement between them to trade rounds.

At least until the 10th, at which point I had to turn it off. Just couldn't deal with it anymore.

 

Yeah I have, and I did almost the exact same thing except I did it about three rounds earlier.

 

It was tepid, I thought.

Ah, go for it. Historically it was important as it began the string of "80's heavyweight alphabet titlists."

Just like I was saying, Spoon and Pinky are my third and fourth best HWs of the 80s, with Spoon higher. Despite this fight.

These two were both upright and elite, but there was a key difference in their similar styles. Pinky had better defence and a much better jab. There were obviously other factors, but Pinky won most rounds on not being hit as much and Pinky pushing Spoon's wig back with the jab. Spoon threw some wicked body shots, and tried to counter the jab with his over hand. He just couldn't get off quick enough. Confidence also looked like a major factor, as Witherspoon had lots of respect for Thomas, but Thomas seemed content to walk through Witherspoon's best. Witherspoon did really try in the late rounds, but Pinky just kept that jab in his face and coasted.

Round six and seven were pretty awesome, bit the rest of the fight was pretty average.

Spoon had a point deducted for back handing wtf

 

I love the name of that era. 'The Lost Generation'. Almost storybook.

 

To read the monthly panning of the heavyweight landscape in the magazines then, no one ever referred to it as "storybook," that's for sure.

Come to think of it they were constantly panning pretty much everything in the rags then. Seems funny now, because we now look back on that decade as such a golden era.

 

Yeah, they all seem quite underrated on the whole from guys at/from the time. I have a feeling Wlad's era will age the same way.

 

I remember how one magazine story actually made vicious fun of Page and Tubbs in their writeup of the fight, saying things like Tubbs distracted Page by promising him boxes of Twinkies and other snack cakes during rounds.

This fight gets a bit of a rep as a robbery, and I figured if it was then it's a good showing of TNT's skills. If it's not, it should be interesting to score. Plus, I love Bowe.

For someone both fat and old, Tubbs looked both quick and sharp. His straight right over Bowe's jab was excellent. I don't know yet if Tubbs ever had quick feet, but he certainly didn't here. Tubbs had a very clear strategy though, he hit Bowe with a cross-counter whenever he could, timed his jab well and slowly circled to his left. He also knew to duck under the jab and immediately clinch as to ward off Bowe's insane inside game. It didn't hurt that TNT was really good off the ropes. Bowe should've varied his offence a little, as he was very predictable and let Tubbs work off the ropes.

Not a robbery, or a great performance from either but a decent little fight. Bowe could've won some of those last few on aggression, but I thought Tubbs edged them on clean punching. In all honesty I think this was just a case of Bowe being too easy to hit. If Holyfield stuck to just counter-punching the whole time, I have no doubt he'd have won. Same with Lewis or Louis.

Pinky just seems made to beat Berbick, but clearly not. Berbick, or Futch, showed a good game-plan as he countered Pinky's upward 1-2 with a left hook or a cross-counter. He also smothered Pinky profusely on the inside, while working some ugly looking shots. Pinky was more accurate, but not as active. I'd have thought Pinklon should've just sat back and jabbed, and brought his lead hand up when he saw what Berbick was doing. If Dundee was in his corner, I think he'd have been told to do that.

Another fun fight from this era, as it happens. Rounds five and eleven were exceptional.

 

Woeful but it would be interesting to see what score you come up with. Some saw it as close and others not.

 

Great post. If you ever get a hold of it have a Captain Cook at Page - Snipes. For a very underrated heavyweight stoush definitely tune in to Page - Tillis. Loads of feeling in this one and some big right hands to finish.
