8-4 is reasonably comfortable tho. You make a good point in that Toney would be able to meet him in the pocket with success. Often overlooked is that GGG has just 70" of reach. Toney has 72" and height is basically a wash. McCallum for example had 4 1/2" of reach on GGG and was taller than both. Toney would be well in range to slip and counter jabs.
GGG by comfortable decision Toney wasn't that great at 160. He was lazy and inconsistent and hadn't yet gleaned the high science Bill Miller was trying to impart. GGG's activity and precision keeps James second guessing on this back foot for 12 rounds and finds him on his @ss at least once.
I think golovkin has a great jab, but toney slips and counters those in his sleep. I can't see ggg having enough finesse to get the better of toney.
I could actually see Golovkin being pulled out late or stopped on his feet tbh despite his iron chin. His face tends to swell and mark up and Toney would hit him a hell of a lot imo, and Toney was a very good puncher at mw. So fast and precise on the counter with very good power, mechanics and natural timing. Enough to hurt the iron chinned McCallum, who was defensively a lot more capable than Golovkin. It's not too hard for me to envision Golovkin having impaired vision and struggling to see punches coming by the late rounds. He'd take them I imagine but I could see the ref or his corner taking pity on him. I don't see him beating the Toney of the McCallum or Barkley fights at any rate for reasons others have already stated.
I just dunno, man. It's like people are taking all of Toney's best attributes at any weight, condensing them into a mythical 160 figure and ignoring all his weaknesses. His actual record at MW is less impressive. Toney's better opponents: Sanderline Williams: D Merqui Sosa: SD Reggie Johnson: SD McCallum: SD Dave Tiberi: SD (should be L) McCallum 2 : MD Out of that lot McCallum is the best and he outworked Toney on one occasion and still got the L. While I think MM is an excellent boxer, he's not on GGG's level and his physicality is nowhere near Golovkin's. I'd take Golovkin over that lot every time.
It's particularly telling that you don't consider Nunn on the level of Williams, Sosa, Johnson and Tiberi. Of course Toney just happened to have KO'd Nunn.
he beat all of those fighters.only controversial win was Tiberi and you know damned well that a normal Toney would school Tiberi
Nunn was better than them and he was schooling Toney as well, until his gas tank ran dry. Ross Puritty isn't considered a great just because he managed to beat a gassed-out Wlad after getting drubbed the whole fight.
Normal Buster Douglas would have schooled Holyfield as well, pity we only saw him once. Funny how Toney is great "sometimes" and when he struggles he was "having an off day". Maybe normal Toney IS the guy that struggled with top line opponents and crushed cans (mostly).
One only need look at the level of the guys who competed with Golovkin to work out who's the favorite in this match-up. If you had a chin and some skill, you were more than in with a chance against Golovkin. Toney has the chin and the skill in spades. It's a no sweat bet.
Toney was barely heard of when he stepping in against Nunn. From memory he started coming on in round 7 and fought superbly from there. Nunn was only stopped once in his life and yet again it's disingenuous to try and argue Nunn's gas tank simply ran dry. Have you seen the fight? Toney invested in plenty of work to the body while getting outboxed in the first half of the fight. It sure as hell paid off as Nunn slowed around the 7th from memory. The fight is nothing like Wlad - Purrity, nothing at all. Wlad did it to himself. Purrity and Toney shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence when talking great or anything close.
