I'd just like to take a moment to say that I love Michael Watson. He's my favourite Brit, and only narrowly follows Charles and Pops as my third favourite fighter ever. I love the fight with Benn and the first eleven rounds of the Watson remtach.

Anyway, this fight. Normally I don't like cuts stoppages, but here I don't have a major issue with it. Watson was winning big anyhow. It's good to see how Watson deals with a southpaw, and shows his excellent chin yet again. He knew where to keep his feet, what shots to counter which, and where to have his hands so he could block southpaw punches. He also showed just how smart he was too. This was an excellent showing of how to pressure a longer, taller hard hitting puncher. He slowed the pace down, and flurried opportunely as he found the perfect range to land cleanly and stay safe. Obviously some incredible defence too.

Figured this would be a good fight, and as a draw, this would be a decent task to score.

Spoiler: Round by Round

Slow first; razor thin.

Much more active second, Boza landing harder and cleaner.

Alli out-speeding Boza, lots of movement and quick-fisted combinations. Good round for Alli, Boza was quite lackadaisical here.

Excellent fourth, Alli on form. Slipping and countering in the pocket, he's out-landing Boza. Boza was letting his hands go but not getting as many of his shots in, Alli was just a step ahead for much of the round.

Extremely close fifth. Boza landing heavier, Alli landing more. Toss up.

Wow! Boza gets stunned early, looks unsteady and comes right back with a torrent of power punches which takes his first round in a while on my card. Another very close round.

Close seventh. Boza landing more.

Eight and nine were good back and forth rounds. Both could go either way.

Awful finish, Alli should've been ashamed.

Very good fight. Alli was entertaining in his own right, I think I'll check out the Ramirez fight sooner or later. I loved the fight with Arroyo. Boza was awesome, as you'd expect. Round six was brilliant, both men hurt in that one.

Not too much to say about this one. It's an awesome fight for most of it, the tenth was shameful. No qualms about the decision.

115 - 114 McCallum close fight thought Mike did enough at the end to win it. The commentators seemed to have McCallum up by a lot although two judges scored it 9-3 for Toney which seemed way off.

 

Here's another James Toney fight. His first bout with Montell Griffin. And, like so many of Toney's fights, the rounds are decided by a thread. In this case Griffin is the busier but Toney is the sharper puncher. Here we go

This bout had people all over the place on scores. For instance Harold Lederman scored rounds 3 and 7 10-8 for the respective fighters which i didn't think was reasonable.

 

Yes, Scar, the point deduction was a nonsense call and upset me as I had the fight dead even otherwise and I thought McCallum deserved at least a draw.

Dominant performance from Canizales, Seabrooks hurt him in round 6 and he seemed to take a couple of rounds off, round 14 and 10 could've gone either way, gave Seabrooks the 10th being the champ, round 14 started strong for Canizales but Seabrooks landed the cleaner punches. Good bout.

 

Orlando Canizales - Kelvin Seabrooks II

Solid effort from Seabrooks towards the end of the round, not enough to make up for the rest of the round.

Another solid round from Seabrooks, lands his best punches thus far in a few lead back hands but is unable to get off anything significant due to Canizales movement. Orlando hurts him towards the end of the round and landed the cleaner punches. Could of gone either way, gave to the champ

Whenever Seabrooks starts to build any steam he gets either neutralized by Orlando's movement or hit with something better, can't get set. Orlando hurts him again in the last 10 seconds

Solid fight, Seabrooks not doing enough as challenger to win in the close rounds, as with everyone who fought Canizlaes he struggled to get anything off with the footwork.

A grand total of 0 clinches in both Canizales - Seabrook bouts.

 

Victor Galindez v Eddie Gregory/Mustafa Muhammad

My very own 'monument to indecision' - I scored 5 rounds of a 15 round fight even, albeit one of those rounds was a Gregory/Mustafa round but there was a nonsense point deduction from the ref.

This was nip and tuck all the way with two crafty and defensively slick fighters gaining little edges in there but most of the time shots were slipped and clean hitting was sporadic. I could probably watch this again and score a bit differently.

Galindez was a smooth operator but Gregory/Mustafa was almost relaxed to a fault. While I don't believe that a fighter has to win clearly to take another guy's title, I do feel Eddie was too patient in there, waiting to counter and not really taking the initiative as much as he should have - Galindez can already play that countering game well so it was a real cat and mouse affair.

Not confident in my final tally but feel Galindez did enough here to retain his title.

Clear Holyfield round although Dwight's defense shines here, dodging 11 consecutive punches, he had a strong mid round but Evander was the busier man and landing the cleaner punches.

Qawi's experience over Evander showing here, a poor start but came on strong mid round where Holyfield seemed to be taking a break, close round but Qawi finished stronger. Would have no problem with a 10-9.

Incredible bout and a steep learning curve for Evander, learned not to try and beat Qawi at Qawi's fight and once he started boxing on the outside shown why he is 'The Real Deal'. Not much too say seeing as we're on a boxing forum I'm assuming everyone has seen it and if you haven't, stop what you're doing, go buy a few beers and watch it.

James Scott v Eddie Gregory/Mustafa Muhammad

Didn't score this one as I was a little tired of scoring after the Galindez-Gregory/Mustafa fight.

This one was a little disappointing all round. I probably shouldn't have read Harold Lederman's quote that I saw on Boxrec:
"On that day, I thought James Scott was the greatest light heavyweight I ever saw in my life. That's how great he was. On that one day when he beat Gregory, he was the best light heavyweight I ever saw. I never saw a performance like that — anywhere. I don't think Bob Foster was as good as that. I don't think Archie Moore was that good."
Er, steady on Harold! Scott fought well and won fair and square but it wasn't quite as one sided as I'd been led to believe. I'm inclined to lean more towards Tony Perez's 6-4 score than Lederman's 9-2 as there were some close (not to mention scrappy) rounds.

Scott worked the body well all night and roughed up Gregory/Mustafa well but I thought Eddie was in the fight and Scott wasn't running away with it that far. There was a lot of holding and I thought Scott used his head quite a lot in the clinches, although there was no complaining from Gregory/Mustafa.

Overall, perhaps a greater win than a really great performance?

Peak 'Jinx' Spinks doing what he does, shame we never saw him slug it out with Saad Muhammad

 

The four fights that stand out from that era in my mind are this one, plus Franklin/Saad-Johnson 1 and 2 and Galindez-Kates 1. I think Saad-Lopez 2 is the greatest of those, like you say, and the only other light-heavyweight bout on film that compares is really Moore-Durelle 1. I'm easy on which one people choose as the best out of those two.

 

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad / Gregory - Marvin Johnson is up there as well, Saad has one of the nastiest KOs ever against Mwale, anything with Saad really, his bouts with Qawi / Braxton stand out to me as well but I'm a Qawi fan so I would say that aha. Lopez is one of the best to never win a world title. Too many great moments / fights to mention really but yea, I agree it's up there with Moore - Durelle on terms of how crazy it was, little compares to them.

 

Eddie Gregory/Mustafa Muhammad v Marvin Johnson

Fine fight that turned into a bit of a beating. Johnson recovered well from the early KD but as soon as he stopped trying to trade inside (due to some wicked countering from Gregory/Mustafa) he was always going to struggle. The second half of the fight felt like Gregory/Mustafa was just biding his time waiting for the right moments to attack. Thankfully the ref waved it off as it was only going one way.
