Just out of interest, does anyone honestly think either of these guys last five seconds with, dare we say it, prime Tyson? I would honestly bet my house he obliterates the pair of them within ten seconds. They are both utter gash.

Corbett looks like he's using 30% effort.
When he slips backwards and then ducks under Courntey's illegal backhand punch, he shows really impressive speed and reactions, despite how inconsequential the setting is.

Courtney actually did have a bit of a local reputation, and boxed a four-round exhibition with Fitzsimmons shortly before meeting Corbett. Seems to have been purely an amateur until after the Corbett bout, though.

Got to ask how you gauge he is using 30% effort. Is that an arbitrary figure or have you done a study based on all the available footage, got a pretty clear idea of what 100% looks like and ... well, I don't know.

Wearing 30% of his trunks, maybe.

To me, it looks like every other clip of Corbett. The pantomime 'put 'em up' guard, the chin hanging out to dry, the low hands while stood still. I see absolutely nothing impressive, including the ever-present buttocks.

Dwyer was dead about ten years before Courtney came along, Peter himself died a tew years after the Corbett fiasco.

Trenton Sunday Advertiser- 1894 Aug 19 (page 3)
Peter Courtney, Trenton's heavy weight fighter, stood the four rounds with Bob Fitzsimmons at Cochran Park last night, and therby earned the $100 according to the advertisement, Courtney claims they gave him only $5, however; and he i very bitter in consequence. Andrew Cochran acted a referee and time keeper. The bout was very tame, although in the first round the blood spouted from Courtney's nose. The pavillon was packed. In the second round Courtney made some effort to hit Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons toyed with him. In the third round Courtney showed some pluck making several leads which, however, fell short.

    Peter Courtney.

While waiting for a big fight Maher took to the road with a combination backed by Quinn and was also seen to good effect in one night shows in Philadelphia. Quinn posted $500 deposits to fight Slavin and O’Donnell but neither fight materialized. Peter did get a fight, two in fact, from a Peter Courtney, billed as the heavyweight champion of New Jersey. A truck driver, Courtney had little to offer except gameness but managed in a three month period to fight three of the leading fighters of the time, Corbett, Fitz and Maher.

He had stood up to Fitz for four rounds on August 19th and earned himself $100 for his efforts. The fight with Corbett on September 17th was to ensure him eternal fame, as it was the first time a world heavyweight champion was caught on film. They boxed in a twelve-foot room specially designed for filming by Edison’s kinetoscope. Corbett carried his man for six rounds, pandering to the camera before knocking him out in the sixth. The winner got $4,700 and the loser $250. Clips of the film can still be seen and are of a surprising good quality. Corbett can be seen smilingly toying with his inferior opponent.

Lesser lights like Jack Welsh, Ed Warren, Jim Dwyer and Jim Glynn had fallen before the muscular 190 pounder, originally from Philly. October the sixth was the date and the Germania Theatre, Hoboken the venue for Courtney’s tilt at Maher. A large crowd came out from New York, expecting to see a knockout but they were to be disappointed. Chief of Police Marling announced that all would be arrested if the law was violated. Maher appeared in a Guernsey suit of dazzling green and was loudly applauded as was the local man. “If I ever get a crack at his jaw I’ll make him turn a million summersaults” exclaimed Maher, only for the Chief of Police to remind him that he would get pinched if he did.

    Drink and make-up.

Peter soon had Courtney covered in blood from a punch on the nose and the first round was cut very short. Maher switched to the body in the second and in a short but spirited third and final round Courtney was in bad shape having lost considerable blood. “I’m sorry I hit you on that nose,” said Peter, “But you wouldn’t hold up your head.” “Never mind,” retorted the other Peter, “I’ll fight you to a finish”. “Then I wish the police weren’t here to-night,” sighed Maher, “And I’d have flattened you in a hurry.”

Courtney and Maher then adjourned to a neighboring saloon. Courtney got $15 for his trouble while Maher collected the gate money. Maher then improved on this performance when making Courtney quit in two rounds, in a return at the Nonpareil Club, in Philadelphia at the end of the month. Courtney lost in one round to Charley Strong the next year and by 1896 was dead of tuberculosis.

Not saying Corbett ever looks great by modern standards in this or any other film, but I agree that he is just playing around here. Look how casual he is when he throws out that looping right. He obviously isn't trying to hurt Courtney. It's just a gesture to show how he might have countered if he had been engaged in a real fight. The bout is just an exhibition for the camera to see how motion pictures would work in a prize-fight setting. Nothing else. Nobody was supposed to get hurt.

Nice to see such smooth action!
