    Fifteen rounds! Layne as of now is the better. Ruiz has one good win. Let’s see if he can bounce back. But I’d say Layne by decision in his prime.

    Unless Layne can stay away and outbox him, I can't see him winning. Ruiz is too strong.

    Rex Layne was a top flight contender who compiled a good record very early in his career. He beat Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, Bob Satterfield and Cesar Brion. At 6’1” 205 lbs he was a respectable sized heavyweight. Ruiz fought some better guys and was a little bit bigger. He was however not terribly aggressive and clinched excessively. I’m thinking the busier man takes a points win, whoever that may be

    I think a fairer fight would be Fatty Langtry against Ruiz. Layne is to good for him. More I think about it more I think Layne our points him by a wide margin. Layne had a good chin before Marciano crushed him. Survived Satterfield, Thompson, Walcott. I don’t think Ruiz hits any harder then those guys and lacks the skill of say a Walcott. Maybe he fairs better against Fatty? Depends who weighs more that day I guess...apparently weight translates to skill around here

    That’s what everyone’s thinking. Especially the “much stronger” comments. I don’t see any proof that he would be stronger. Just fatter.

    Layne didn't have a fast-twitch muscle fibre in his entire being. He was slow and open, banking on a power he really didn't possess in great quantities.

    Ruiz's biggest obstacle is overcoming longer, disciplined fighters who don't let him close the distance. Layne wasn't any of that. If anything, Ruiz becomes confused by all the openings and their duration.

    Curious as to how you arrived at 205lbs for Layne.For the following fights he was.
    Marciano 193lbs
    Satterfield 190lbs
    Brion 194lbs
    Walcott 192lbs
    Thompson 194lbs
    Charles 195lbs

    James Dawson, New York Times, scored the bout 7-3 for Brion, giving Layne rounds 1, 2 and 8. Associated Press scored the bout 7-3 Layne.
    Dawson wrote:
    “Plunging and tossing like a rudderless ship, Rex Layne, Lewiston, Utah, heavyweight, somehow or other managed to gain a decision over Cesar Brion, from the Argentine, in ten dull rounds of fighting at Madison Square Garden last night. And if there is any consolation in a moral victory, Brion has it. A crowd of 5,768 booed the verdict and it was plain that many, if not the majority, thought Brion had won.”

    In a blatantly obvious hometown decision, Referee Jack Dempsey scored 2 rounds for Layne, 1 round for Charles with 7 rounds even. Most objective observers felt Charles had won. During the fight Layne butted Charles repeatedly without caution from the referee.

    Legendary cornerman and trainer Ray Arcel said,"Instead of adding dignity to the fight game, Dempsey has added disgrace."
    Reverse these very controversial decisions and Layne's record suddenly doesn't look so good!

    Ruiz can’t bend his knees more then two inches...not an exaggeration. He has a lot more problems then closing the gap. He has little stamina and very predictable offense. He throws crisp combos when he managed to get in close. And had an A plus chin that much credit he deserves. But let’s not pretend he’s Evander Holyfield. That being said I don’t agree with you that Layne was slow at all. Had his own faults defensively but he also threw nice combos and could fight at range or close up.

    Lol it was implied in the strength comment. That’s my story I’m sticking w it. Although the psychic angle isn’t to bad either
