That McCallum’s capabilities are being ridiculously played down by Golovkin fanatics (the usual suspects) is no surprise since, there is only so much one can do with Golovkin’s record, before the superiority of past masters show his numbers to be without substance and look relatively mundane. Dumping on boxers with the greater resumes, which record the better wins; who have been filmed giving the better fight performances, against the higher levels of opposition, in which they exhibited their better skillsets is nonsensical - but, perhaps understandable.

From the point of view of a Golovkin zealot, who lacks any credible argument for a titlist, who struggled against the best he fought, it must be difficult to put a case together for him in any of these speculative, head-to-head match-up discussions. Golovkin exciting the eyes of those watching him knock over B and C level opponents, at which he previously excelled, is not a convincing enough argument, when pitting him against the likes of Toney, McCallum and Nunn.

McCallum, in particular, is named in a few ‘Greatest P4P Boxers of All Time’ listings, including:

    - Bleacher Report - @No. 83
    - @McGrain - @No.76
    - The Ring Magazine @No.79

McCallum was also listed as the:

    - 87th Greatest Puncher of All-Time in the 2003 Ring Yearbook.
    - 32nd greatest boxer pound-for-pound over the last 50 years, by RBR Boxing, in 2018.
    - 6th most underrated Boxer in Boxing history, by the gruelingtruth.com, in 2019.

Apart from it being generally accepted that McCallum was a Top-5 Light Middleweight of All-time, he is also quite likely a Top-40/50 Middleweight of All-Time, with better wins at 160 on his resume than Golovkin’s. While he could be considered old, when he met Toney, this didn't stop him going on for a few years afterwards, lifting a strap at Light Heavyweight and successfully defending it twice.

And, regardless of his age, there were people at the time of the Toney fights, talking about McCallum in terms of him being the last of a breed; possessing skills already lost to the wider sport, with much credit for this being given to the truly legendary Eddie Futch. IIRC, he might have even been considered the betting favorite going in to their first bout.

Toney faced, in McCallum, a vastly more capable boxer than Golovkin, whose only characteristic of note, in this case, would relate to his seeming punch power (I say “seeming”, because it wasn't particularly apparent when he competed with actual world class middleweights). Toney would find it comparatively easy to land on the slower and less agile Golovkin and, with Toney having respectable power himself at 160, he would dig hard enough, I suspect, to at least take the ‘devil may care’ attitude out of Golovkin’s approach to the fight. Either way, Golovkin is going to ship a lot of leather, probably take a fair bit of facial damage along the way and be frequently found wanting in skills, when his one-dimensional ‘predator’ style, is shown up time and time again.

Nothing really weighs in Golovkin’s favor, for this one since his power, such as it really is, becomes redundant against a chin as proven as Toney’s.

It would at least give the Judges an easy night’s scoring, with there being no doubt that Toney was the clear winner.

    Toney W [wide] UD.

Wait, let me try a rebuttal.

No, Canelo / Golovkin was on a higher level.

    See?

At least I am talking about fights I watched. You obviously did not even watch the Toney-Mc Callum I fight.

Golovkin's punching is much harder and and his jab much heavier than Toney's. Couple that with his workrate and it would be no surprise to see Canelo throw less than McCallum did against Toney. You can't just go boring in face first against a guy like GGG. The people that tried ended up badly.

Well GGG has a good jab but he is not going to outbox Toney. Again, you are not going to outwork Toney either when he is fit and ready, at least not over the whole fight (maybe in some rounds). I gave you the punch stats, a ready middleweight version Toney is busy himelf. This would be a fight where GGG puts on the pressure on Toney. A good fight but I see Toney's eye catching counteres, slick defense, superior infight skills granit chin leading him to a close UD.
