Who do you think will win, in their prime?

I am a Dempsey fan but i have to favour Louis

However, it depends on which version of Louis

IMO Louis peaked in 1942. He was 28 years old, still had lightning fast hands, but he was more filled out at 207 pounds. More importantly, Louis now had the experience that even the 1938 version didn't. Louis was great vs Schmeling in their rematch but he had yet to encounter a prime quality heavyweight who fought from a crouch.

After Louis dismantled Godoy in their rematch, he showed how to deal with a crouching fighter, something that his younger self wasn't quite as proficient in. Of Dempsey was 10 times better than Godoy but stylistically Louis learned to deal with swarmers.

Louis pre-Godoy version: I favour Louis 60-40. IMO Louis appears to have slightly quicker hands than Jack, but more importantly, Louis throws straighter punches so he will likely land first. Their is always a chance that Dempsey lands a big left hook or a big combination and staggers Louis so badly that he can't recover. But IMO Louis will survive a few rocky moments early, and win by a late tko due to being the more precise puncher. It will be competitive but ultimately i favour the more accurate puncher in Louis

Louis post-Godoy version: I favour Louis 80-20. Dempsey always has a punchers chance but IMO this version of Louis is even more refined than his younger self. Louis had mastered everything by this point. Manassa Jack has a chance if he can hurt Joe early and go for the kill but IMO Louis wins late, perhaps surviving a knockdown along the way.

Probably one of the ultimate fantasy matchups right along with Louis vs Ali and some of the other more dreamt about matches.

two fast handed ferocious punchers of legendary proportions. I would like to favor Joe Louis by virtue of being the superior combination puncher with faster hands and a more proven track record against better competition. But Jack Dempsey is a dangerous proposition for anyone.

Dempsey inside 3 rds,he wouldnt let Joe get into the fight.
Louis' chances increase dramatically the longer the fight goes.

Dempsey knocks Louis down but is eventually stopped in great explosive fight.

    Joe Louis wins this.
As has been mentioned, his hands are faster, punches are shorter & straighter, puts crisper combinations too.
He doesn't need to stalk and go looking for Dempsey either.
Louis inside 5 at most IMO

    Hmmm... really great fight....
*Louis by stoppage in round 7 or 8.
I'll say a prime Louis is shocked by, and struggles with, the pure ferocity of a prime Dempsey in the early stages of the bout. But weathers the storm, gets to work, and knocks him out in the middle rounds.
My prediction is not made a great deal of confidence.

Dempsey is favorite. He is the greatest boxer of all time ... in the first three rounds. Louis was methodical, thoughtful, usually starting a little slow. Dempsey was lightning fast, mobile and highly aggressive, with extraordinary intensity at the start of the match. Louis's chin was good, but not great. He was knocked by Schmeling, went down with Braddock, Walcott, was damaged by Conn (fast, elusive, but not a puncher!) ... Two offensive boxers who hit hard, but one, Dempsey, is more mobile and with higher intensity. However, if the Mauler doesn't knock the Bomber down, he loses. In the long run, Louis wins. Dempsey has one big flaw: durability.

He wasn't even the greatest with his name.

Mine was a semi-serious joke: Dempsey is the greatest boxer of all time ... in the first three rounds.
