Going a touch under the radar. Good fight. I think this is Villas coming out fight. Hes not the most explosive guy but he has exceptional boxing, which he honed as a world class amateur who was just unlucky enough to be in the same weight class as Stevenson (Who he beat twice). Navarette is much more hurtful and experienced, but Im edging towards Villa on this one. Thoughts?
I agree, Navarette is finally fighting someone his own size, and still looked drained and had to strip to make weight. Villa's skillset is sublime, and he's yet to fight a slick truly skilled boxer. So without the size advantage for this definition of a weight bully coupled with an opponent who won't be presenting him with a readily available target, he's not going to look good at all. I think VIlla will dominate the majority of this match. Although I still worry that Top Rank and their ridiculously lopsided pro-A-side cards won't be favorable to him at all.
Yeah, it's totally asinine, there's no such thing as guys who can easily make 175, draining themselves down to near death to get to 154, then rehydrating to 170 overnight so they can smash the bits out of the far smaller fighter. Fake news. Never happens.
If someone can make a weight easier than another fighter, so what? Are we going to say it’s unfair that some people are taller than others next? Physical advantages exist in sports, get over it.
So, you don't think it's unfair for someone who can't make the weight unless he drains himself to the point of almost losing consciousness, sometimes looking literally moribund on the scales, just to have an advantage over an opponent? I mean, wouldn't it be much easier for them to fight in a division they can make weight in easily, without nearly killing themselves? There's physical advantages, and then there's literally forcibly shoehorning yourself into a division you shouldn't be fighting in because you're too scared to fight guys your own size.
I understand what you’re saying, but if two men of equal or near equal size are fighting each other and the one can make the weight easily and the other can’t, how is that the guy who makes the weight easy, his problem?
There’s nothing in boxing bylaws that say all fighters have to be equal size to each other. That’s essentially what you’re trying to say.
Of course there's no laws stating that, but it does look bad, and fighters who are clearly doing everything in power to have some kind of an edge over their opponents, it's kind of a ***** move. Not saying they should outlaw it, but when it's clearly the case, there's nothing wrong with fans pointing it out and attempting to guilt they guy into a division that's more suitable for him.
The idea of weight classes is to level the playing field. Some can take the advantage of that, unfairly so. How is it fair that Chavez Jr. was around 180 on fight night while his opponents were closer to 170?
I stated it clearly Physical advantages exist in sports If a fighter can make weight easily WITHOUT CHEATING, that’s it, end of story
Navarette late stoppage. Villa has a horrendous gas tank! He starts breathing with his mouth open from R2 or 3 on...watch it! I'm also not super impressed with his footwork. And you need really good footwork to keep Nava at bay. I think Villa will rely on counters, question is if he can land enough to make it close. Volume is on Navarrete side. Don't think Villa has it really. I know he beat Shakur and Haney but both looking much much better in the pros.
