Berbick was a top contender and belt holder. He got further than the majority of people who ever laced up gloves. What more could he have done besides be an all time great?

I wouldn't call him a waste of talent. He was a champion. He was also a top contender for years. He pushed Larry Holmes although Holmes was a better fighter. Comparable to most any of the parade of WBA champs during Holmes' reign.

I have never in my life seen the claim that Berbick wasted his talent etc. Less topics and more study.

It might be said he was an overachiever. Going into the John Tate fight, most would not have predicted he'd be a top 10 contender for much of the 1980's.

I would just like to chime in as the 33rd person here to say that I've never heard anyone say this about Berbick.

Ive never heard berbick called a "wasted talent"...lol he didnt have much talent...no one looked at him like hes amir khan or hector canacho snr...a "talent"...berbick was a big strong courageous heavyweight who had a very good career...alphabet hw champ...always in shape...tough...only a moderate punch...but very limited skills and footwork....wasnt into drink drugs like many of his 80s contempories

He got the international showpiece against a ancient and ill Ali and got the win.

Hes part of history with Tyson. He fought holmes for title

He lost to guys like douglas and truth williams and beat guys like john tate, david bey, mitch green, pinklon thomas, greg page and iran barkley....fought 24 years ...the 1990s he went undefeated 1990-1995 ,won more than he lost thereafter and retired canadian champ.

Very solid ,succesful career. He did what he was gonna do....(excluding thomas upset) a rare guy who didnt lose when u expected him to win and who didnt win when u expected him to lose

I guess the both of us missed out on this memo JT. I've never heard this either. I've heard "awkward" and "limited " and know Holmes tried to drop kick him. In my opinion he got the most out of a " decent" skill set and physicality.
