One of the greatest super flyweights of all time, 2-time world champion, Olympian, defeated 7 world champions and in the words of Rafael Mendoza. The Sugar Ray Leonard of the flyweights. This content is protected This content is protected IMO he definitely deserves to be in it.
Same reason Ken Riley in football and Dave CONCEPCION in baseball isn't, guiet and not part of the popular clique.
I was driving through New York State about eight years ago and stopped in Canastota. I talked to a guy who worked at the IBHOF and he was asking me questions about my thoughts on future inductions. I actually mentioned Gilberto Roman, Jiro Watanabe, Donald Curry, Rodolfo Casanova, etc. The guy didn't know any of them sans Curry and appeared hell-bent in arguing Arturo Gatti deserved the nod over any of them. So yeah...I don't put much emphasis on what the IBHOF says or does.
Because the process for nominating hall of fame fighters is a **** house. I've seen it first hand; a lot of the guys involved don't have a clue. And I mean they don't know who the nominees are. They have to google them to find out. Or ask people. It's nothing to do with the fighters, it's to do with the panel. That said, there are some good guys on it that know lots and the guy who runs it is a great guy.
Just a few names that came to mind who should be in: Ernesto Marcel Rodrigo Valdez Michael Nunn Miguel Lora Santos Laciar Meldrick Taylor Gilberto Roman Lionel Rose Sung Kil Moon Yuri Arbachakov Antonio Esparragoza Chucho Castillo Jiro Watanabe I could go on and on.
Roman is on the ballot for the Class of 2021... but with Mayweather, Wladimir, Ward, Toney and Cotto added to the ballot, he has 0 chance of being voted in.
9 of the men you mention are already in: Hamed Wright Papp Mosley Loi Carpentier Gibbons La Barba Bowe
Lack of research and/or knowledge on the part of the voters I think. Roman should have been in years and years ago yet will almost certainly never get in.
Because the HOF is an absolute joke and the process is complete shyte. The fact that they can only let 3 participants in, and then always choosing the more modern fighters on their first year of elibility already makes putting so many more worthy fighters in much more difficult. Gilberto Roman should have been in decades ago. The fact that Gatti was able to get in before Roman is already a slap in the face.
