Why do you say Trevor Berbick was a "waste of talent"

Able to go distance with Holmes, able to win the WBC Heavyweight title, oh i wish i had wasted my talents like that.

Boxing at that level it seems gave him stability in life, sadly things spiralled down in the years after.

 

The larry holmes drop kick must have broken his buttock bones landing the way larry did on that car and pavement.

I heard Berbick was a reverand and became caught up in some allegation.

His death was a cowardly attack by i beleive his nephews.

 

Berbick was a very good fighter. I tend to think the guy who took prime Holmes 15 rounds would have done better against Iron Mike (though he still would have lost, for sure). The Tyson fight was...what, six years after he fought Larry.

Hey, he had some solid wins, including I believe a couple of upsets. A very awkward fighter who had undeniable heart imo.

 

Off of memory, I'm thinking he won three upsets - against John Tate, Greg Page, and Pinklon Thomas. He also lost at least a couple he shouldn't have - against Renaldo Snipes (maybe) and S.T. Gordon.

 

Would've starched Holmes and Tyson if he'd bothered trying. What a waste.

 

Lots of ppl say that the most heavyweights from the 80s and 90s wasted their talent. Maybe I've been around more casual circles. Lol

Losing to Tyson may've created this false narrative amongst certain fans. Just like Spinks losing to Tyson and being only remembered for that by many.

Almost the only negative thing said about him was that he had a couple of performances seen to be poor i.e. Gordon and Snipes back to back. From memory he was extremely uninspired against Gordon. Trevor was a very strange fish tho.

 

Tyson would have knocked out any version of Berbick early. 2 years prior to the Holmes fight he had been iced in one round by Bernardo Mercado. 2 fights later he drew with Leroy Caldwell 21-19-3.

His only performance of any note pre Holmes was beating Tate who never went any good again after being pole axed by Weaver.

Berbick was on a 9 fight streak going into Tyson including the best win of his career over Thomas right prior to Tyson and a stoppage of David Bey. He'd also beaten Mitch Green a few fights prior who some seem to rate a bit.

Tyson was an electrifying swarmer with great power who was brilliant at knocking out good and quite good fighters early. Holmes was more a boxer type with decent but basically average power who wore them down with accumulation and ability.

 

Myriads of 80's heavyweights did indeed waste their talent. Berbick was not among them.

 

Rather than a waste of talent Berbick was inconsistent. He looked horrible losing a decision to CW ST Gordon in 83. He was thought to be done after that horrid peformance but rebounded to beat Thomas. If he had never recovered from the Gordon fight then maybe a wasted talent moniker could apply.

 

The 'wasted talent' quote started in the Bonavena vs Berbick thread the other day. It's the only time I've heard it. The question should have been posted there.

 

Why put something inconsequential in a thread when you can start yet another new topic.
