Do you consider Deontay Wilder letting his rematch clause expire a duck?

What are his other options? There is not a single fight in wilders future that’s as big as this one, either financially or in terms of prestige. Fury destroyed his brand, image and future earnings. His only shot at redemption was a Hail Mary KO against Fury

You can’t blame him really, imagine having your self confidence and ego destroyed so badly that you can’t accept the reality of what happened. You would probably want to avoid going back into that situation. At least not without having a chance to get your bearings and confidence back against a simpler challenge

Becuase come next year when we have crowds back, If AJ ducks Fury then I bet my account we will get Fury Wilder. If we don't then it's a duck and hopefully we get Fury Whyte etc.

 

Not sure it can be considered a duck as he's dumb enough for it to have been a genuine miscalculation on his part. I think he's inadvertently priced himself out rather than running scared.

I don't blame him, he had no positives at all to take from the previous fight. Nothing to cling onto for some hope and frankly, next to no chance of achieving a different result.
Its for that reason that I credited him for taking the fight on (although I thought it a bad decision for boxing). It seemed he wanted it again and was willing to fight despite all that.
I obviously now withdraw that credit, but won't slate him. He was absolutely humbled on the night of their last fight and that's enough for most men.

 

According to Tyson Fury's own team, no. Wilder didn't really have any say in the matter. According to Arum, Wilder is "another victim of the pandemic."

Arum and Warren wanted to stage the third fight because it's worth a helluva lot more money in their pockets than a fight with a no-name. The networks offered January and February dates.

Tyson Fury is the only one who wanted out.


Frank Warren interview in USA TODAY:

“Everybody has worked hard to get the Wilder fight on, but it’s just not happening,” he said. “It’s not that [Wilder’s team] have been difficult. We all understand what needs to happen.

“And I’ve said before on this program, Tyson’s fight back in February with Wilder was the highest grossing heavyweight fight ever in Las Vegas, in terms of gate. So that’s nigh on a $20 million gate; where do we get that from with no crowds? It leaves a massive hole.

“So we are basically looking for a territory or a country to come up with what we call in the business a “site fee” to pay that. But unfortunately, because of the virus and various other problems, it has just not happened. So we have got to move on.”

While Warren acknowledged that a Wilder fight could eventually be arranged, his focus is on finding an opponent for Fury in December.

“Maybe next year or some time down the road we will do it, but our immediate job is to get Tyson sorted out for December,” Warren said.

“The fight contractually had to take place sometime in July, and threw a provision for a postponement into October. Then Fury agreed to do the fight December 19.

“Why December 19? Because of the big beautiful couple of billion-dollar stadium that has been built in Las Vegas for the Raiders would be available, and we could get permission to get ten or fifteen thousand people in attendance.

“Then what happened was the networks (Fox and ESPN) that were going to distribute the pay-per-view said, you can’t go December 19 because there are five college football championships. They’re huge on that day and two NFL games … on the same day.

“We couldn’t go December 19 and then we realized we couldn’t go any other time in December. Fox and ESPN gave us two possible dates, one at the end of January, and one at the end of February. When I discussed it with Tyson he said, “Look, I’ve been training to have the fight by the end of the year.

“Unfortunately for Wilder, Tyson is not under contract to fight him anymore. So he (Wilder) is another victim of the pandemic.”

 

Not a duck he fought the man 2x ffs. The whole thought of wilder ducking fury is hilarious. He was just stopped by fury he needs a confidence fight before getting back in the fire.

 

Yeah, looks like it's a money issue. That's actually a big revenue loss. Does make sense to do it later, but can also provide it's own risks if either fighter loses in that time.

 

It would make sense to do it in January, like his team and the networks and everyone brought up to him, but Fury won't wait.

He has to fight Jean Pierre Coopman in December, apparently. He just "has to." (LOL)

 

Haha, well both camps have lost some money waiting, so I don't entirely blame him. Even January could be a moving target. I actually think this helps Wilder to get used to his new camp and ideally he should take a few tune up as well.

Yes. And the sport moves on. But, if we're not getting the two of the top heavyweights in December, it sucks that the first instinct of Fury and his team is to pick the worst possible opponent to defend against, which appears may happen.

If he's in peak form, take on someone else who is good.

So that criticism I agree with. Fury so far has only taken on Klitschko and Wilder and after that his resume is pretty weak. I would love to see more top 10 guys fighting each other.
