Christy Martin, with every physical advantage against here ,including 10 years in age, puts up the very best fight she was still capable of. And we've got threads about Andrew ****ing Golota! This content is protected
Has there ever been a regulation against it? My thread is about a boxer exhibiting great heart, and I think my example of Christy Martin a super light weight against Laila Ali, a super middle weight , 5"1/2" inches taller, and ten years younger, with 6'.1/2" reach on her illustrates that courage. Anyone disagreeing is free to post on the two threads on Golota a fighter whose rectum fell out on numerous occasions.
Golota fought Mike Mollo with one eye shut for half of the fight. He came out on top and won becoming Emanuel Steward's personal hero in the process. During the second half of Andrew's career he showed heart and resolve that was seemingly absent in the first half of his career. If only his physical prime coincided with his mental prime, he'd have been a reigning heavyweight world champion, maybe even undisputed. A reminder: he was robbed against Byrd and Ruiz. Golota is a Polish idol of millions, none of us on here will ever be able to touch that. Besides, should we really be criticizing any boxer if we haven't stepped into the ring ourselves at the highest level?
He beat Mollo a journeyman and he quit against Austin and Grant.I don't care how many people worship him, he's a quitter and a foul fighter. I don't think he has the heart." - Emanuel Steward, Lewis' trainer, speaking about Golota before the fight. "I wanted to get rid of all of the misfits, and this was the last misfit." - Lennox Lewis speaking about Golota after the fight. "There was too much pressure. I was nervous." Andrew Golota on his performance against Lewis. "He froze." - Lou Duva, Golota's trainer, on Golota's performance against Lewis.
I"d have to concur simply baiting a high level proffesional fighter"s courage...one who fought with courage and equilibrium many many more times than the few occasions he quit isnt by any sensible analysis a wise or fair position. Golota in fact had a long succesful amateur and pro career despite his mental health issues at time. Rather like a roofer who works 15 years on a high rise despite a crippling fear of heights The Ruiz & Byrd robberies were quite sad to watch....I think being crowned WBA & IBF champion may have given this shy bashful man the confidence to conquer perhaps his demons consistently .As it is he provided entertainment, notoriety and thrills and unpredictability in the HW division for 15 years. I beleive his wife was a lawyer? And his daughter is a celebrity in Poland?
Yes you are right Cobra. The fouls are not excusable however with regards to the "quitting", in my opinion, it is clear from the Grant fight these were not "quitting" per se but panic attacks...in the Lewis fight caused by the pressure of the big occasion though one would have fought the Bowe fights were big occasions too....in the Grant fight...he utterly inexplicably just stopped fighting...who knows what demons this kid had to deal with?
Im free to post a thread about a pioneer of womens boxing too, a gutsy fighter who always gave her best. And if you don't approve , you're free to ignore it .
If Golotas varying 'failings' is down to his mental health then firstly why in the hell would he agree to face the likes of Bowe and Lewis. Secondly the medical experts overseeing our sport obviously failed in their duties, as Mr Golota did not just err once supposedly due to mental health issue. I have never fought at a level anywhere near that which Golota did, however those of us who have fought at any competitive level would never themselves think to use supposed mental health issues to explain the negative behaviours that Golota at times exhibited in the ring. Back to the thread, Martin sure showed true heart, outweighed, out gunned, shorter reach and height, Ali had all the advantages and used them to good effect, so plaudits to Ali for that, but dam Martin had the heart of a lioness, losing but going down fighting. Martin was one of the pioneers of female boxing and opened doors for those that followed to go through.
I agree with the portion of your post dealing with Christy Martin, but you are showing "Mr. Golota" too much respect, IMO.
Not just quitting in the grant fight and the egregious fouls against Bowe in TWO separate fights, but he quit against Tyson in one of the most disgusting forfeits in sports. People claim he had an injured neck but even if that's true, he didn't bother saying anything to his trainer or to the ref. That's why I don't blast Vitali or Liston as much because they at least SAID some thing and we have confirmed medical reports. Golata literally shoved his trainer out the way who was cussing him out on live tv, spit out his mouth piece, and just hopped out the ring like he was playing a video game. Just unbelievable behavior on multiple occasions in several fights.
And now this has become a thread on Golota... Martin deserves her own thread. She was entertaining, skilled and gave the consumer every cent of what they paid for.
