Frazier would boil down to cruiserweight today. Ike was strong and durable enough to back feazier up since like you said about povetkin, feazier could not fight backing up either. Any half decent super heavyweight would completely out muscle Frazier. This should be obvious

I kinda agree with Ike, but Povetkin I don't know man. Frazier would be the physically stronger of the 2, backing him up, bobbing & weaving, smothering him on the inside. He'd get under Povetkin's hooks and counter with his own. Povetkin has the better two-fisted power, but his best punch is the left hook - which ain't better than Frazier's. Frazier by UD or late TKO.

Povetkin is a lot more diverse than Frazier, just because Frazier has a better hook doesn’t mean he automatically wins, and how exactly is Frazier the stronger of the two?

I feel he'd be physically stronger on the inside is what I meant, as he was very strong & better on the inside. What do you mean by Povetkkn is more diverse? I'd say he's a better technical boxer if that's what you mean, but Frazier beat many boxers who were better technically than him, and I don't know what diverse skills Povetkin has that makes him stand out.

Frazier was a swarmer with a left hook and that’s about it really

This and more, or as you posted Etc.

I'm probably only going to initially read p1. This is another of those nostalgic "golden 70s era threads" :shakehead: Believe me I know why so many cling to it. Started getting cringey 10-15 years ago. Look for Joe's era he was a modest sized HW with excellent tenacity and a great left hook. He was one of the best... in his era. You only have to look at both Foreman fights to see Joe's expectations in the LL/K bro era and even earlier.

I think a peak Mike Tyson might stop him early. Holy could beat Joe. Frazier was a slow starter. When he was rising in the ranks Bonavena decked him twice in a round and Joe was about to be stopped. He survived that round and won a decision. Bonavena was a strong, durable, but not very talented even in that era. 1970s worshipers build up fighters like Bonavena to build up Joe F to build up Ali to mythic proportions. Also fighters like Joe (and Oscar B) would be just too big to boil down to CW, especially when they got a bit older. in the 2000s era a HW like Joe would be very small and would be blasted out of there or UD by many top fighters.

For the record Marciano would have to campaign as a CW in recent to current era. He easily could and think he'd be CW champ.
    But at HW - fuhgetaboutit.

Exactly, threads like this are annoying as hell because everyone just hops on the nostalgia train. Some people on here are convinced that no one of the past 30 years would beat him, it’s ridiculous

Povetkin went life and death with caveman cruiserweight Marco Huck and was dropped and went to war with glass jawed frail David Price. He has quite a few fights where he went the distance and couldn't put a dent in his opponent and never really outmuscled or imposed his will.

    Frazier: 5'11 205, 208, 215, 218, lbs in his best fights average 212.

    Povetkin: 6'2 224, 228, 229, 231 in his best fights average 228

That's a difference of 16 lbs and Povetkin is a chubby guy carrying a lot of fat in his chest, belly, and sides. And again I don't recall Povetkin being some physical monstrosity outmuscling or overpowering the majority of his opponents. You're acting like Povetkin would be "dwarfing" Frazier when there is only a 2.5 inch difference in height and a weight difference due to Povetkin eating more steaks and abusing Peds. Peak Frazier trained down to get to his tip top shape to operate with such a high gas tank and relentlessness. He essentially was already boiling down to cruiser and the trainers of his day discouraged bulking up with weights and eating the way fighters do now. They'd be roughly the same size if Frazier fought today.

Frazier beat guys who were both taller than Povetkin and just as heavy if not heavier while also being as skilled if not more skilled. Muhammad Ali certainly and you could argue Mathis and Bugner have comparable skill to Povetkin (they certainly surpass him in size and mass).

Looking at his resume Im not seeing how he "completely outmuscled" Frazier. I'm not convinced Povetkin being fatter and slightly heavier will be the huge difference maker here. What will make a difference is that Povetkin is more well rounded than Frazier and could box as well as swarm. He had great fundamentals from his Russian amateur background and could bang decently with either hand.

I don't think Povetkin could match Frazier's pace and I doubt hus soft belly could endure those relentless body shots. Contrary to popular belief he threw plenty of right hooks as well (see the Machen and Stander fights) and could employ head movement even at close range. Unless Povetkin manages to stop Frazier by the mid rounds I see him either dropping a decision in a gruelling but competitive fight or getting stopped late due to fatigue and the relentless pace and aggression.

I agree completely. It's ridiculous that people think anyone from the last 30 yrs. could beat Frazier!

Glass CC, I'll let Tony have a go at you. But you know you're cherry picking Povs record.

A near 41 year old Pov KTFO of a consensus top 5 HW (at least top 10). Pov has been fighting big to super HWs most of his career not Huck. Whyte would stop Frazier, likely early. Or wear out Joe and win a UD. And don't bring up B Mathis, Whyte is much better than Buster.

There are some who could. I think the only guy who could have done it consummately would have been Bowe. Bowe would have been wrong for Joe, mostly because he was an excellent infighter and had the type of jab and uppercut that could eventually stop Joe. No doubt Bowe would have been quite hurt manifold times along the way.

Tyson was faded in the 90s (I realize this is an unpopular opinion). If Douglas and Holy could stop him, Frazier would have wiped him out imo (though it would of course still been quite a good fight, and Joe could have been knocked down once or even twice). I can't see Joe being intimidated at all by Iron Mike...Mike didn't like guys like that. He also didn't like guys that turned it on in the middle rounds, at least in his 90s incarnation. He tended to get a lot more cautious after Douglas.

Prime Mike had plenty of tools to stop even FOTC Frazier imo.

Fury today would get wrecked by Frazier. Frazier loved tall goony guys like him, had fun chopping them down. Fury would be down on his Jethro Bodean ass within 7 and wasted in 10 imo.

Say what you will about nostalgia, just watch the tapes of Frazier 1967 to 1971.

The Mike of the last 30 yrs. didn't though. Bowe's the only safe favorite over Frazier. Nobody else imo. As I said, Holy would give him a tough time, and McCall and Mercer might be able to bomb him out, but I am doubtful. I do think early and mid 90s Tyson could give Frazier hell, maybe even reach an SD or a draw, but I wouldn't favor him over Joe.

I think Lewis would have a very good chance because of that (Steward-era) jab and excellent uppercut. The problem is the chin...but, as I see it, I'm sure Lewis would have taken Joe a LOT more seriously than Rahman or McCall. A good fight, but I still see Joe taking the decision.
