Sure, it was fine. Hardly "bionic" as was played up though.

First, sorry about the tennis match. I myself once tried to leap majestically over the net following a match in order to impress a gaggle of girls in high school and caught my toe on it going over. Faceplant right in front of them all. Second most embarrassing public thing that ever happened to me.

But as to this.......I mean a youtube compilation of KO's doesn't give you much perspective, which would have shown Gomez hitting them over and over again with his never-ebding combinations. Look how he landed multipunch combo after combo against Pintor for 14 rounds before he finally fell, or how Juan Meza gobbled up his best shots for six rounds without ever going down.

His KO percentage..........I think that speaks more to just how much better he was overall than his opposition at 122. He was a true Everest in Kansas. If he were a truly epic puncher in the way a Jackson or Foreman were, you'd see him burying most of these overmatched opponents in a couple rounds but if you watch his fights you'll see him simply overwhelm them with fluid combinations over a number of rounds that they were powerless to defend against because they couldn't match his skill.......it wasn't really about the power per se.

Again, as I initially noted, this isn't to suggest that he couldn't punch. Sure he could, but the lofty KO percentage coupled with the complete disparity in how he actually got them makes him the perfect candidate to mention here.

Nice one Mike! When i put Gomez on the second tier one has to realize the second tier is also very ratified air.

Just for reference on pure power i rate Jamie Garza a slightly harder puncher than Wilfredo at 122. Wilfredo however was streets ahead of him as a fighter and Garza just couldn't take it back. I rate Gomez as a big banger make no mistake but i just think on pure power he is slightly overrated.

Smith only knocked out 32 of his 62 opponents. He's an overrated puncher. I have Zero idea why anyone is arguing this. (LOL) He didn't knock out Ricky Parkey or Levi Billups. He couldn't even beat Levi Billups.

You're going to the wall with Bonecrusher Smith? I thought people would be mad I said Ray Mercer. (LOL)

Someone in this thread said Wilfredo Gomez (42 KOs in 48 fights) was an overrated puncher, and you're arguing for Bonecrusher Smith and his 32 KOs in 62 fights?

If you would've wagered that Bonecrusher Smith would score a knockout every time he stepped in the ring, no matter how awful his opponent was, you'd have lost half the time.

    Overrated.

Couldn't you make the argument that any specific fighter is overrated as a puncher based on any one or two specific examples out of their career? Has any fighter demonstrated bone-breaking KO power in every single fight? I immediately thought of a young Hearns going the distance with a "meh" Alfonso Hayman, who nobody remembers, and not making nary a dent in Luigi Minchillo, who nobody really wants to remember. I'm not claiming Hearns was overrated at all, either, just that i'm sure you guys can make a logical case against anyone for being "overrated".

Not in the least. It's a thread about overrated punchers. I named three. I defended my point.

What am I supposed to say? Nobody is overrated? (LOL)

Well, I will try not to do that.

But Bonecrusher is an overrated puncher. (LOL)

I actually disagree with that. I wouldn't get so absorbed with raw stats, there's always more than meets the eye there.

In his case, he threw so hopelessly few punches that to have a really high KO percentage would mean he had truly, undeniably crushing power that few humans could ever recover from. Even Tyson didn't hit hard enough to stop that many guys if he had hit them as infrequently as Smith did his opponents. He just wouldn't throw.

I don't think he's Foremanesque as a puncher, but he did hit real hard I'd say.

Few fighters considered among the greatest punchers in history - from Louis to Julian Jackson to Zarate - are known for the high volume of punches they threw per round.

They didn't have to stay busy for three minutes a round and throw a lot because they didn't need to in order to get the job done.

None, that I'm aware of, only managed to stop half their opponents, like Bonecrusher.

As I said in my initial post, I'm not saying Smith couldn't punch. Most heavyweights can punch. But I think he's clearly "overrated" when it comes to power, given that he only stopped half of his opponents. That's not a lot. And his entire rep is he was a big puncher.
