Any talk, two or three years ago, of Lomachenko taxing Duran, was more than a little optimistic back then. It now seems to have been nothing but a way beyond fanciful idea.
Jesus **** Someone in this actually thinks Rigo would trouble Duran? I think I may actually have heard it all
Well some people are doing damage control and claiming Loma just had an "off night" taking too long to "download" Lopez. Some are even trying to convince people it was a draw or that he even deserved a split decision. If anyone gave Loma more than 5 rounds they are clearly smoking beer and drinking meth. Duran is the last opponent you want to be giving away rounds to. I was 95% certain he'd win this match up but now Im 100% certain. I was sorely disappointed that he didn't live up to the hype.
Some of these posts like saying Loma was better then DeJesus and Buchanan haven't aged well. Always tricky comparing a current fighter and not hugely proven guy against one of the greatest ever like Duran.
Duran was so strong and hit so hard but that was not all he had... He was not easy to hit. Many boxing fans of today got to see Duran way past his prime.. He retired at the age of 50 and his last 30 fights were not a reflect of who he was as a champion. How could anybody campare a fighter with barely 16 fights with Duran ? Arguello, Chavez and few others would have had no problem beating Lomachenko.
It's only natural for a generation of new fans to eagerly anticipate the next best thing. However, in more recent times (the last couple of decades of social interweb evolution), this eagerness seems to have given way to a flat-out penchant for invention. Throw in the proliferation of super divisions, titles and super titles and you have the environment for a packet of 'Insta-Legend®' - just add hype.
A prime Roberto Hands of Stone Duran as World Lightweight Champion from 1972 until he abdicated his title in 1979, would do a number on Vasyl Lomachenko. He would cut off the ring on Lomachenko, as he did to various movers like Vilomar Fernandez, TKO 13 and Lou Bizarro, TKO 14. Vasyl could not beat Teofimo Lopez the other night, Duran hits much harder, has a brutal killer instinct and would attack his body viciously. Hands of Stone takes down Lomachenko in round 13. Duran defeated the likes of Esteban De Jesus, Ken Buchanan, Ray Lampkin, Ishimatsu Suzuki, Hector Thompson, Edwin Viruet and Leoncio Ortiz. He had a total of 12 title defenses since stopping Ken Buchanan on June 26 1972 in the 13th round.
